SOUTH DUNEDIN DECIDES TO AMALGAMATE.

Considerable interest; was taken in South Dunedin Borough yesterday in regard to the polling oil the question that the borough and the City of Dunedin should be constituted one united borough. The oppo uenls of amalgamation worked strenuously all day to defeat the proposal, and employed traps and vehicles to convey as many voters as. possible to the polling booths, and not a few were of opinion that the efforts in this direction would be successful. The first return fo be made up, that of the main polling booth at the Town Hall, served to give considerable colour io this oninion, as the returns there showed 319 against the proposal and only 263 for. As tlie returns from each*of the other three booths came in, however, it became evident the majorities were overwhelmingly in the other direction. and the finnl result showed that a total of 56+ votes was recorded in favour of amalgamation and 430 against, leaviiig a majority of 154- in favour of the proposal. Only 11 informal votes were recorded, 10 of which were at the main hootli and one at the Salvation Army feracta. As indicating the interest taken in the poll it may lie mentioned that of ?.?,57 persons on the roll, 1024 .recorded their vote?. The polling hours 1 were from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., and at 7 p.m. the Returning Ofiicer (Mr D. M'Konzie) announced the result as follows: —

Proposal. Against. Informal. Town Hall 26S 319 10 Korbury School Gymnasium ... 61 20 — Salvation Army Barracks ... 131 44 Cargill ltoad Booth 12+ 37 —

Totals ... 58+ . 430 11 Majority for proposal, 154.

The announcement of tho result, of Ihe poll was made in the presence of about 150 persons, and was received with applause. Under an agreement- entered into between the City Council and thn .Soutli Dunedin Council yesterday's poll does not take effect until March next, and oach of the parties to the agreement has '30 days in which to petition the Governor on the matter.
