THE GREATER DIMEDIN SCHEME.
SOUTH DUNEDIN DECIDES TO AMALGAMATE.
Considerable interest; was taken in South Dunedin Borough yesterday in regard to the polling oil the question that the borough and the City of Dunedin should be constituted one united borough. The oppo uenls of amalgamation worked strenuously all day to defeat the proposal, and employed traps and vehicles to convey as many voters as. possible to the polling booths, and not a few were of opinion that the efforts in this direction would be successful. The first return fo be made up, that of the main polling booth at the Town Hall, served to give considerable colour io this oninion, as the returns there showed 319 against the proposal and only 263 for. As tlie returns from each*of the other three booths came in, however, it became evident the majorities were overwhelmingly in the other direction. and the finnl result showed that a total of 56+ votes was recorded in favour of amalgamation and 430 against, leaviiig a majority of 154- in favour of the proposal. Only 11 informal votes were recorded, 10 of which were at the main hootli and one at the Salvation Army feracta.
