THE DUNDEDIN TECHNICAL CLASSES ASSOCIATION

Tlio Victoria Hall was crowded on Nov. 4, when tlio successful students attending tho technical dassns were presented with tlio diplomas and certificates they had won during tlio past year. Jlr A. Burt, president of tho association, occupied tlio chair, and thoro were also present Messrs G. 11. Thomson, D. It. Jiunson, R. AJ. Clark, AV. Hood, ,1. T. Paul, D. R. White, D. A. -M'Nicoll, J. Jeffrey, and 11. (i. Whotter. Tlio report of Mr Angus Marshall, tho superintendent of tho classos, stated, inter alia:—

Tho total number of students enrolled was 1030, the number being made up as follows;— 31 at Port Chalmers, 50 at Mosgiel, and 955 at Dimedin. This represents au increase, of 200 at IDunedin, but this numcrid inoiease docs not adequately represent tho additional work undertaken, for tliifl year the number of students attending more than one class was much greater than in former years. The subjoined table, showing I lie attendances r,t tho various'classes for each quarter, gives a bettor indication of the amount of tvork attempted. In order to have properly accommodated all tlioso classes a much larger number of rooms would have been required, and this insufficiency of accommodation, in several cases, necessitated the formation of classes too large, not only for ofiicient teaching, but also for convenient supervision. Under tho scholarship regulations 321 students were granted free tuition. A few of these did not continuo their courso beyond tlio first, week, and nearly a third 'At, the same time, llio scholarship list contains tho names of many of our best and most consistent workers, ami with ecrlain preliminary precautions on tlio part of liie association to ensure regular attendance I consider tho scholarship regulations may bo made productive of much good, and this without in any weakening the finanws of tho association. In addition to the. Ires places granted scholarship holders, remission of fcos was allowed to 32 students, whose circumstances sewnnd such as to entitle them to this concession.

Tho report referred in detail to the working of the various classcs, and acknowledged the. valuable assistance, rendered by Professors Black and Shand, the examiners, and teachers, etc.

'l'lio Presidonl reviewed the work of the year and the working of the now regulations, and pointed out that it would bo impossible to accommodate the anticipated influx of new students unless tho Government assisted by providing the necessary buildings and classrooms. Addresses of a sympathetic nature were given by -Mr AV. Hood (treasurer of tho Otago Trades and Labour Council), -A|r Paul (president of the same body), and -Mr R. AI. Clark. Tiio senior and junior diplomas and the class certificates woro then distributed among lbe students entitled to them, and the proceedings closed with three cheers for the president, the committee, the cxaminom, tho teachers, and -Mr A. Marshall (the superintendent).
