THE HAIRDRESSERS' EMPLOYEES' PETITION.

TO Till; EDITOR. Sir,—A petition is being numerously signed by the hairdressers' employees against (lie 6 o'clock closing provisions of the Shops and Oflicca Act. The petition was presented to 111 c by an assistant for my signature at a time when lie should have been working, which appears to 1110 as though his employer had allowed him time off to work in the employers' interest, with perhaps a threat behind it. It eeems unnatural to 1110 that a man should, when tho act provides that 110 sba.ll knook olf at 6, petition- the Government, to extend his time two hour?. The only conclusion I. can come to is that the petition einen«.te3 from an employer instead, as is inferred, from an employee.—l am, etc., Assistant. South Dunedin, November 18.
