THE WOOLLEN INDUSTRY.

TO THE EDITOR. Sin, —I have read with some interest Iho leading , article and correspondence which have appeared in your columns, ».nd am under iho impression that the real dilnoiilty has not. been touched upon. Your correspondents question the soundness of the reasons given by the directors fer the flowprogress of the Mosgiel Company, but they do not suggest any alternative theory. I am afraid that the company have, failed to accommodate its methods of 'sain to Mβ' spirit of the times. For example, I nm informed that it declines to deal with any but wholesale houses. A T ow, in tlio early days of the company this policy was doubtlefs a perfectly sound one. Retail business was in it 3 infancy, and the company would navo invojved itself in a quazmire of financial difficulties if it had availed itself of this source of output. But the .commercial activities of the colony have been revolutionised iincoSthen, and, to my own certain knowledge, there are a surprising number of first-class business homes that would bo only to glad of the chance of dealing in Mosgiel products if they could procure them direct from the Mosgiel Company. And these people are just as well able to nwntoin.a creditablo account in the company's ledger as the tho wholesale houses. It may possibly, be. said that the adoption of this policy might alienate a portion of tie wholesale trade; but, Sir. wo all know that in these days business is business, and wholesale houses, like everybody else who lias tho cash, will always place their orders where they can get the best value for their money. Mospel ought to be able to sell their goods to much better advantage than other mills, which are at a greater distance or are less favourably situated. I am told, too, that they have a line of railway right into their premises, and that, in addition to other advantages, they have abundance of coal and water at their very doors. I trust that' the matter will be thoroughly thrashed out, and that the above suggestions will meet with the. consideration whiob I am certain they, deserve.—l am, etc., -Progress.
