A Paris cable advises the death of M. Paul do Cassagnac, the French statesman;- aged 61 years. Deceased was famous scmo. 25 years ago for the virulence of his hatred of England and his numerous duels. According to an Invercargiil telegram all the Trades Unions there favour the rcnomination of Mr R, Slater as the employees' representative on the Arbitration Court. The flags ou the shipping and at the wliarl were at half-mast yesterday out of respect to the late Mr Bird, second engineer of tho s.s. Coriuna, whose death took place at Wellington on Saturday as the result of injuries received from an accident ou the steamer on Thursday last. A Blenheim telegram states that the highest marks recorded so far in New Zealand in the musical examinations being conducted at various ccntres by Mr Graham Moore, representative of the Associated Board, have been obtained by Miss Violet M'lntosli, of Blenheim, who was a candidate in the singing division. She is credited with 140 out of a possible 150. This is believed to lie the highest number of marks ever gained in the colony. Mr and Mrs Raeside, Rev. H. W. and Mrs Johnston, Mr and Mrs Fraser and child, Mrs and Miss Tansley, and Mr C. E. Gray arrived at the Coffee Palace yesterday
