BOWLING.
OPENING OF THE DUNEDIN BOWLINGS CLUB'S GREEN. The Duncdin Bowling, La\vn Tenuis,' anil lives 01 ub opened the bowling season on Saturday afternoon by, as is customary, playing a match President against Yicepresident. Howlers began to drop into the green as early as a-quarter past 2, and by the timo the gamo commeiiccd there were many more than tho green would • accommodate. The members ot the club" mustered strongly, and there wero in addition many visitors from sister clubs, who, while they evinced tho liveliest interest in the proceedings, considerately declined to take part in the game to tho exclusion of members of tho club. Some, however, under pressure irere prevailed upon to put on slippers, and tee how near they could get to tho jack. Tho green was looking very well, but tho first head disclosed that it was playing heavy, something liko V 5 per ccnt. of the bowls being short of tho kitty'by several feet. A few heads, however, sufficed to get tho f.trcrtgtii of the green, and from that out somo good play was exhibited. Several veteran members of the club, such as Mr A. M'Diarmid, did not play, but tliey were noverthelo=3 present as onlookers of tho game in connection with which they have fought many a hard fight in bygeno years, and at which thej; are still very hard nuts to crack. The ladies'were present in fair numbers, and added in no inconsiderable degree to the attractiveness of tho scene. Mr Sonderhof's band had been engaged for the occasion, and being accommodated with a position on the balcony of the pavilion, played selections during tho afternoon. Tho weather was fine, though a trifle chilly, particularly for onlookers, hut was not sufficiently cold to seriously interfere with tho comfort of those present on the green.
Mr Marl; Sinclair, president of tho e'.ub, ill the course of some brief remarks before play commenced, said lie regretted that their opening function was shadowed by the news they had received from Wellington in regard to their late esteemed friend and brother bowler, and long-time member of the club, Mr James Hislop. Of course, many old bowlers had played with him, and had known him probably longer than he (Mr Sinclair) had done; but all,, had held liiin in tho highest esteem, and they all regretted that their opening day. should he shadowed by the'news received of Mr llislcp's death. They were!about, to open the season 1904-3905, i and 'ho .was certain that every bowler present, even it ho was not playing, would agree that the green was in tlui most perfect order it- had been for years. He desired to accord the ladies and visiting bowlers a hearty welcome, and trusted one and all would have a most enjoyable tioie. Their lady friends had provided plenty of tea, and ho hoped every-, one would recognise their efforts and partake of their hospitality. He had very much pleasure in declaring tho green open, and would call upon Miss Sinclair to throw (he first bowl.
Miss Sinclair then iook her stand upon tho mat. unit, having- thrown the jack, pent 'lip the. first bowl of tho season after it. The game flton commenced in earnest, and, as will bft seen from tho appended scores, resulted in favour of the Vice-president by 4 points. Players and scores: — President. Vice-president. J. C.
