(Feb United Peess Association.)
AUCKLAND, September 15.
Tho Auckland drapers and clothiers, a 4 a largo meeting, unanimously passed a series of resolutions protesting. against the proposed incroa;e in the import tax on shoddy materials, and formed a committee to resist any increase, and porsibiy to agitato for a reduction in the existing duty.
WELLINGTON, September IS. Mr Witlieford, M.11.R., wired as follows to-day to the chairman ot tho clothing goods meeting. Chamber of Commerce,. Auckland:—"lie extension of Commeroei Parliamentary Committee and Woollen manufacturers, I shall bo very pleased to arrange with Mr T. Mackenzie, chairman of our committee, if you desiro to'haro clothiirs' representatives' evidence taken, as the iuilest information is desirable. Evidence was taken yesterday on the tobacco trade, both sides being heard— manufacturer ai:d importer. Judging by newspaper reports, misapprehension exists as to tho impartiality of tho inquiry regarding woollen products. I can assure you that tho committco is most impartial, and desires to hear both sides of any question before reporting to tiio House. Shoddy Bill is not proposed. No need for serious apprei hciieioh as to present arrangement's in connection with trado beinjt disturbed."
