YA-XCOUVEPv SERVICE.

The Aorangi left Suva at 4 p.m. yesterday for Honolulu, Victoria, and Vancouver. She carries a large cargo of colonial products, and a very fair complement of passengers. Included in her passenger list are tho British football team, who are evidently out to make the most of their visit to the Antipodes. They came to Australia by the Suez route, and have chosen the Vancouver route, through' Canada and the United States, for the return journev, go that by the time they reach Homo again they will have seen as much of both worlds —the Old and the New—as it is possible to 6«e in the round trip.

Tile Monowai, from Sydney, may be expected by 8 o'clock to-morrow morning at Dunedin wliarf.

After Iwitig thoroughly scraped, cleaned, and repainted, the s.s. Talune was floated out of tho Port Chalmcr3 graving dock yesterday. Sho takes up her running; in tho East Coast and Auckland trade on Saturday. The Union Steam Ship Company's steamship Waikare, Captain Worull, left the George street pier, Port Chalmeis, after tho arrival of tho 2.50 p.m. train yesterday, with passengers and cargo for Sydney, vi» Cook Strait.

Tho 6.5., Koonya steamed down from Ditncdin yesterday afternoon, and went alongside the shccrlegs, where she embarked a largo screen 25ft long tnd 6ft in diameter at its largest part, which has' been constructed by. Messrs Stevenson and Cook from designs by Mr A. Morrison, for the Biackwater River Company. After shipping this heavy piece of work tho Koonya left for the West Coast ports, via Oamarit and the north. i Tho Union Company's cargo vessel Aparima; dua here this morning from Calcutta, via New Zealand ports, broke one of her propeller shafts on August 22, nine days after leaving Singapore. The Aparima is a twin-screw Vessel, and while the repairs to the broken shaft were being' carried nut she was able to steam along at a speed of about eight knots per hour, working one engine. Inside 40 hours the disabled shaft was repaired by means of a coupling chain, the break having occurred near the engine. During the remainder of the voyage a .speed of about 10 knots per hour was maintained Captain C. M'Donald has with him the following officers Chief, -Mr R. G. 13ell; second, Mr R. G. Leech; third, Sir J. Baldwin; purser, Mr H. O. Ellis; chief engineer, Mr H-. J. Dove; second, Mr .'. ltankino; third. Mr 11. Sinclair; fourth, Mr W. CJ. White; fifth, Mr E. A. Binns; chief steward, Mr E. Cresswoll. After discharging hero the Aparima will probably bo docked at Lytteltcn, where permanent repairs will bo effected to her shaft. The largest cold stores in Europe aro at Southampton, and are a conspicuous feature to anyone going up tho river to that port. Tho main building consists of fivo floors, containing 56 rooms, baring a total net storage earning capacity of 2,000,000 cubio fcot, sufficient for the storage of upwards of 4800 quarters of beef, 155,000 carcascs of sheep, and 1,300,000 cubio feet, space for miscellaneous goods, such as butter, fell, game, poultry, eggs, fmit, etc. Tho method of cooling employed is ammonia direct expansion, tfiree of tho floors beingarranged on the gravity air system, and one floor on the air circulation method. The rooms aro arranged for cooling, chilling, and sharp freezing, in which any necessary temperature can lw mair.ained.

A Press Association telegram wnich we published regarding tho .inquiry at Auckland into the wreck of the barque SaragoK.ia on Mangaia Island merolj" stated that ilia captain'a certificate iiad been fiuspondctl for tHrco mouths, and that he had been ordered to pay the costs of the inquiry. The Auckland papers report that the court found that there had been negligence in not allowing for discrepancy between tho two chronometers, ill not using the patent log or the hand log, in not allowing for set' of current, and in not having rounded the vessel when tiie v.cathcr conditions became unfavourable when the vessel was known to be in proximity to the island. Mr Kettle. S.M.. remarked that the gallant cajiduet of tho second officer, who volunteered to swim ashore with tho line, was worthy of high commendation. His volunteering to go nehore was the means prob.ilily of saving tho lives of, if not all, some of the crew, while it appeared very probable that he would bp drowned in his endeavour to savo the lives of his shipmates. Tho court placed his gallant conduct on record. With_regard to the death of tlio snilmaker, Jones, tho court was unanimously of opinion that it- was purely an accident, and that neither the. officers nor tbo creiv were to blame in the matter.
