(PF.II UNIT]!!) I'IIKSS ASSOCIATION.) CHRISrOHURCH, September 12. An inquest opened to-day on tho death, which occurred on Saturday, of tho illegitimate child of Caroline Hantz. Tho /'child was put into bed with its mother, who left it alono for about 20 minutes. At the end of that period tho child was dead. Tho medical evideiico was that tho child was found with its face flattened on the right side, and its lips and skin were blue, pointing to death duo to suffocation. Tho inquest was adjourned till tho 26th inst., and n post mortem examination will bo made.

Henry Antiss, who was severely burned at tho Glentunnel explosion of benzine on the.3rd inst., died at tlio Christchureh Hospital to-day.

Mr Maxwell, registrar of births, deaths, and marriages for Duncdin district, met with an unfortunate bicycle accident yesterday afternoon while cycling to his office. Througli some accident or othor tlio machine slipped and Mr Maxwell was thrown heavily on to tho asphalt car track, sustaining a severe shock and several painful abrasions and bruises. Mr Maxwell was convoyed to his home in a cab, a3 ho had received a severe shaking.

Mr Leslie Smith, son of Mr B. F. Smith, of the firm of Smith and Smith, was tho victim of n somewhat serious accident on the tram-line near the Gardens on Saturday afternoon. Mr Smith was driving along the North-East Valley road with his wife, and when in the vicinity of the Gardens ho was compelled to cross from one side to tho other to avoid collision with a barrier erected during the laying of come asphalt. Just at that time a car proceeding to_ tho Valley camo round the corner, am" another car standing at tho Gardens gave a ring before starting/with the result that 'tho' horse became frightened and swerved violently, upsetting the trap and occupants on to tho footpath. Mrs Smith escaped with n shaking and several brakes, but Mr Smith sustained abdominal injuries which will compel him to keep to his bed for some weeks; No serious oonsequenees are, however, anticipated.
