break is due to the desire of the natives to lie free from the produce of white men. They do not like being compelled to work, and wished to be allowed to live as they liked, without restriction.
THE NEW HEBRIDES MASSACRES.
BRISBANE, September 12. (Received September 12, at 9.10 a.m.) Further massacres arc reported from the New Hebrides. A boat belonging to the French recruiting ketch Charollaise, with a crew of five natives, landed at Mallicolo.
The natives surrounded tile boat and killed four. The fifth escaped, though wounded, and swam to the ketch.
A second tragedy occurred aboard tho French labour ketch Perle, when lying off the coast of Santo. The nntivc crew butchered Captain Le Bonhelie nnd the mate, Willie Champion, while sleeping. They then stripped the vessel, nnd escaped in boats to Aoba, where they wpre captured. A French warship has goiie to investigate.
