CRIME IN AUCKLAND.

AUCKLAND, June 23. The house of Mr R. Laird, Mount Eden, was entered .md a quantity of jowellery stolen. Sirs Laird took liar children out for a walk. On .her return she heard a man running along a side passageway, anil on entering tho house found tho drawers rifled and emptied, tho cupboards searched and boxe3 opracd, wiiiie a couplo of writing: cases wore smashed to pieces in tho search for_ valuables. Investigation showed that articles of jewellery to Iho value of £30 had been stolen.
A'c4sn of assault and attempted lobbory took place in Upper Nelson street last' night. A middle-aged man named Beagle wa.s about to cross a gully when he was ussailcd by a young man, who struok him on tho face and tlieoi attempted to overpower him. Beaglo micocedcd in giving the alarm, and his assailant decamped.
