SPORTING.

LTJNEDIN JOCKEY CLUB WINTER •■■■'■•. • MEETING. Undor the existing weatherconditions the attendance at the first.day of the winter meeting of the Diinedin .lookey Club, held -nfc \Vingatui yesterday, was remarkably good, and if tho club had boon more fortunate with' regard to weather there is little doubt tlio attendance would have been a record. Quite a number of ladies braved the elements, and the grand stand, even with the disadvantages of a dull, cold day, presented an animated and even brilliant appearance. During the afternoon Sir J. (J. Ward paid a ■visit , to the course, and among racing notables present were Sir George Clifford, Messrs R. 0. Campbell, J. B. Kcid, C. D. o: Tesch'ornaker, and Woodroofn, while the officials of the club attended to almost a jnan. Mr H. L. .Tumps was, as usual, kept occupied over tho many duties that fall to the lot oi a secretary. Mr H. Piper despatched his fields invariably well away, Mr K. -Swing acted as lion, judge, Mr I'. .1. Townsend'as lion, timekeeper, Mr .G. W. Williams as clerk of scales, nnd Mr .1. Jeffs us clerk of coura. The track was very heavy,, particularly along the back ot tho courso and at the mile post, and its heavy, greasy condition was no doubt responsible for.tho downfall of some fairly well backed horses during the afternoon. The dividends in the. earlier part wore, nothing extraordinary, and it'was not until tho Maiden Plate was. reached that investors—that is, the. lucky ones—pocketed anything sutatantial. In this cveiitMariposanaid £11 2s, Manjess being made,a hot: favourite with more than half the money in the machines on him. Crown Imperial also paid out pretty handsomely in the Tradesmen's Handicap, returning his backers £9 163. ' The next best dividend was piid by Donna Rosa in tho closing event of tho afternoon's sport. . The total investments amounted to £5077, as against £«86 for last year, the increase being £391. Tho Kaikorai Band was in attendance, arid played'a number of selections during the afternoon.most acceptably. The providing of the luncheon was in the hands of Mrs Bpßtson, who has established quite a reputation for herself in connection with such Slattern'at Wingatui. In the Hurdle Eaco Phaotoiiitis showed the' way throughout until the last hurdle, where' Cathorine Gordon, who had beenjumping and going well throughout, moved up to him on the inside, and took tho last obstacle with the Phaethon liora>. From that out she" had no difficulty in accounting for him, and beat him comfortably at tho finish by a long neck. A complaint was laid by her rider that he had been interfered with by Phaetbnitis at the last jump, and the result, of .the inquiry was that Byrne, the ridor of Phnctonitis, was severely cautioned. In the Brighton Hack Handicap Ben More lost' considerable ground at the ntiirt through, dwelling at tho mark, and three furlongs from homo was behind his field. Tho Southland horEo Bluestone (who had been running handy in the early part of the. race) and Eawmoro drew out,, and, once in tho straight, Bluestone ran homo a winner with a bit to-spare. Ben More put in a good run and landed fourth. In the big handicap Sychem, under punishment, was hurried off v.ie mark, and, galloping kindly for the first three or four furlongs, drew clear away from ■ bis field, but at that point he stopped, and .faded out of the raco. After Sycbcm had retired Vladimir took up tho running, and piloted the way to the straight, where ho also compounded. Once in the straight, Canriie Chiel, who had always been' handy to tho leaders, together with Terrapin, drew'out from the others, nnd Terrapin, outstaying Cannis Chiel in tho last few 'strides, had a triHo in hand as he sailed past the pbst. ; Pampero, who began well, was closo handy to his sfable companion ns, they, turned out. of the straight, and was afterwards lying about fourth or fifth up to the finish of the race. .He never appeared dangerous,' and his rider was uneasy upon him beforo the straight was reached. Manjosj, after beginning well in the Maiden, and-showing the way to the field, failed to see. the last furlong of tho jolirnoy oiit, and went under to Mariposa, who came from behind, and scored a lcr.-gth and a-half victory. Crown Imperial took up the running in tho Tradesmen's Handicap after two'furlongs had. been loft behind, and lasted long enough to defeat Flower 0' Clutha, whoso saddle had sapped back during the race. In the Saddle.Hill Hack Walter, after Guard of Honour had shown the way for the first three furlongs of the race, Bluestone had him beaten, nnd won after stalling off a challenge-from Tunrenieff. .Tho scratching pen was freely used in the last raco of the clay,, the Winter.;\y : elter Handicap,. Doiijiiw Rosa became prominent at -the'start, dbdi; afterwards registered' oho.of tlio easiest, wins' ever recorded at.Wingatni. !•• Tnt!. following are soipo details concerning the various races run '. For the Great Northern Hurdle Race a splendid field of 13 sported silk, Roseshoot being made latiiev a better favourite than Up-to-Date.
