(Received April 25, at 9.8 a.m.) ■ There is unbounded enthusiasm in St, John's, Newfoundland, over the French shore settlement. A BANK REPORT. Tho report of the London Bank of Australia for last year shows that the profits wero £104,446. A dividend of per cent, is declared on the preference and of 2vr per cent, on ordinary shares. £14,310 was carried forward. Tho transferable deposits total £1,587,000, other deposits £2,354,000, casli investments £1,558,000, and bills £3,310,000. COMPENSATING SETTLERS.
BERLIN, April 24. (Received April 25, at 9.8 a.m.) Tho Reichstag has voted two million marks as compensation for losses sustained by German settlers in SouthWest Africa. GERMANY AND THE COMMONWEALTH.
A German newspaper states that, in consequence of Mr Dcakiu's insulting references to the German Consul in connection with tho recent wreck of the Elba, tbo German Government has lodged a complaint.
