CRICKETERS' CARNIVAL.

The cricketers' carnival in the Garrison Hall was very well patronised last evening, all the available accommodation upstairs being taken up at an early hour, whilo there was but little space unoccupied downstairs. The stallholders and assistants made' the best of their opportunities, and the resuiis of their labours were most satisfactory from a financial point of view. The pretty dances; given under Miss Ha'mann's directions were a source of great enjoyment to all, being, as they were, nmongot tho best features of the evening. Bnggss orchestra lent -valuable assistance, playing a number of selections during the evening, as well as supplying the music for tho marches. A number of competitions havo been decided with the results given below. Unfortunately, owing to tho indisposition o! one of the secretaries, the names of tho winners were not available last evening, and we can only give the nom do plume in each case:— • Drawing Competition (open to all schools).— ••Jack''l,'"Maori Chief" 2. Map Drawing.—Sixth Standard (map of India): "Young Australia" 1, "Pansy" 2. Fifth Standard: "Alpha II" 1, "Union Jack" 2. Fourth Standard: "Brown" I,' H. H. 2. . Writing.-Sixth Standard: "Irk" and " John Doe" (equal) 1, "Richard Stone" 2. Fifth Standard: "Oliver Twist" 1, "Mary Pink" 2. Fourth Standard': " Sniithers" and •' Niagara" (eoual) 1, " Queen May" and " May" (equal)

The judges (Messrs R. Hawcridge and W. Cross) slated that' they thought that the writing was v.ery gooct indeed, and they were surprised at the clearness and legibility of it. The maps drawn'by the competitors in the class for Sixth Standard pupils were described as'Tcifily excellent. Only, two prizes are given in each section, except in cases where there is a tie. ' A matinee .will be- given this afternoon, tins being decided upon so that the cadets' military display on the Caledonian Ground on Saturday will not'be interfered with.
