MORNINGTON MUNICIPAL ELECTION.

The poll for the election of three councillors to represent Second Ward and two • to represent Third Ward in tho Mornington Borough Council was taken yesterday between tho hours of 9 a.m. and 7 p.m. All the retiring councillors again offered their services to tho ratepayers, and in addition there was a now candidate for a seat in each ward. Owing. to recont; occurrences . in the Mornington municipal world—too ivoll known to need recounting here—tlio blection -resolved itself into a contest between the councillors who had resigned and the "progressives," as tho new candidates may lie termed. Tho two old councillors were again elected for Third Ward, 'but a change has been made in tho representation of Second Ward, Mr W. 0. M'Nce being cleeted in place of Mr Thomas. Holgate. The number of ratepayers on the roll in Second Ward was 407, and the number in Third Ward was 363; but -tha election did not apparently evoke a great deal of interest, and the voting was not licavr. Only ono informal vote was cast during the day. The result of the election for Third Ward was announced about a quarter past 7, and that'for Second Ward, in which there was one more candidate, was announced r. few minutes later. '• • Messrs Dickson and Simon were declared elected. _ After tho result cf the Sccond Ward election had been announced Mr Hope returned thanks to the ratepayers for having placed him at tho ton of the poll for the second time within a brief period, as it showed that they' had confidence in him. He had 1 done his best for Second' Ward in tho past, , and he would do so in the future, and ho hoped that tho good feeling .that bad existed in the old council -would.continue. Mr' M'Nee also' returned thanks for -tho position in which lie had been placed. -Ho . was going 'to do all in iiis power for the benefit of the district, and would do Jiis host to cany out- what he considered was for the 'benefit of the -ratepayers. Judging by the treatment meted out to a councillor who resigned and who was rc-olectcd' ho did not know that be occupied an enviablo position, but he hoped .that ho would bo able Io work barmeniously with his fellow ' councillors. : Mr Anderson, in returning thanks for his re-elcoiion, said that lie was ,10 ''. V W anxious to return to the council, owing to , the position of affairs, for seme time-past.., He would give every question full' consideration. and vote as seemc-d best to him. With reference to the free tram passes, he considered that councillors wero entitled to the privilege of riding free on the trams." Ml- Dickson (Third Ward), in returning . thanks, said that his action in the future wouM be tho same as in the past. Ho , would always endeavour, to do his best for his ward and for the borough as a whole, and he would try to have everything carried on in a proper way. Mr Moody stated that- be thought' he. had' ' polled very well, and lie wished to tliahk those who had cast their votes in his favour. > He also intimated tjiat lie intended tq again offer his sen-ices at the next election. 1
