■ (Feb United Phks3 Assooi/.tioh.) WELLINGTON, October 1. At about 8 o'olook on Sunday morning tho steamer Queen of the South, bound from Groyuioiith to Foxton, cams into collision. with the slwwr Gprtie. from Wcstport to Wnnganui, off Kiourangi Point. Bit wfa wa> dirty and' rainy at tho time.. Both vessola wero -damaged tvbont the rails and bulwarks. An inquiry will be. hold here. < ■■ - - ■- — Tho s,a. TJpoln arrived from Qanwu at 10 minutes piist 9 last nijjht. The s.s. Rimu left for Timai'U and Wanganni yesterday. Tho s.s. Moerpki, from Sydney, via Wellington and Lyttolton, is duo her©' to-mor-row, leaving tho following day for Melbourne. The s.s. To Anaii, from Auckland, arrived early yesterday morning. leaves this afternoon in command of Captain Berncoh, Captain Clift remaining ashore for orders.

Tho s.s. Koonyn, from Greymouth, w due to-day. ' Tho Mayor of Port C&llmers (Mr D. A. De Mans) accompanied by (ho Mayoress and town' clerk, went on board H.M.S. Phoebe

yesterday forenoon, and welcomed the Hon. Captain Addington on his arrival to tho Port.

The s.s. Upolu, from the north, is due to-day—a day ahead of her time-t-ablc. Tho Union Stoam Ship Company's steamship Mokoia, Captain J. Gibb, left l'ort Chalmers after tho arrival of the 2.00 p.m. train from Dunediu yesterday with passengers and cargo for Sydney, via Cook Strait. The s.s. Pukaki is being cleaned and painted in tho graving dock before going into commission again. 'l'ho Shire Lino Company's now steamship Kaikoura, under charter to -the 'l'jccr Company, leaves London on October 6 for Australian and Now Zealand ports, of which Auckland will bo the first.

Messrs Swan and Humor launched at Walkend on August 8 a floating dock, which has been built for the Government of Natal to replaoo tho one which was unfortunately lost on i'ts pasßugo out to Durban. Tho present dock, which is of tho saino type as that at his Majesty's dockyard at Bermuda, and aliio of tho one that was built for the port of Durban last year, lias a lifting power of 8500 tons. Its extreme length is 475 ft and its width 90ft gin. Tne distance between tho guard timbers on the sido walls is 70ft, so ,t."*ac tho dock can accommodate fossols up to 68ft beam, and whilst retaining a freeboard of 4ft 3in it can tako a vessel drawing 23ft over keel blocks 4ft high, 'i'ho dock proper consists of three pontoons and two sido walls, to which the pontoons arc connected by means of movablo joints, so that any of ■the pontoons when required can be moved and lifted by the dock itself, thus malting i« sc-lf-docking in all its parts. Tho machinery of tho dock is contained in the upper portion of tho sido walls, and consists of two separate but identical installations. _ The s.s. Gothic is rapidly taking in cargo at the Georgo street pier. She has already takon on board a largo quantity of frozen mutton, rabbits, butter, oats, wool, rabbitakins, etc., and is expected -to leavo Port Chalmers for London, via tho north, to-duy.

There are now under construction somo 44 wanihips for the American navy, with a total displacement of 234,943 tons, a total hone-power of 448.720, and a cost for hulls and machinery of about £15,439,904. In merchant shipbuilding in the year 1902 there was nothing very notable, with'the exception of tho shipbuilding on tho lalces, which is still in a highly prosperous condition. The 6ea coast shipyards have, however, all been busy on work brought over from the preceding year, but not a single contract has been made for a vessel for tho foreign trade of the United States.
