PORT CHALMERS BOROUGH COUNCIL.

The Port Chalmers Borough Council mot last evening, when there were present his Wor» ship tho Mayor (Mr Do Maus), Crs Grimaey, Barker, Tait, Mawson, Eagar, Gibb, Clarke, and Shanks. Apologies for absence wero icceived from Crs Cable and Stovenson.

The Secretary of the Department of Agriculture wrote stating that tho terms and conditions set out in ttio copy of the agreement forwarded by tho council in reference to ita having the uso of the Dunedin City Abattoir at Burnside had met the approval of the Minister of Agriculture. He added that a notice under section' 16 (b) (a) of "The Slaughtering and Inspection Act, 1900," would be gazetted as soon as possible; and this has since been done.—lt was resolved that the letter be given effect to and the matter advertised.

Messrs Stevenson and Cook wrote calling the attention of tho council to the amount charged for water used in their air plant while working on board tho s.s. Weikare, and requesting tho council to make a substantial reduction thereon. Thoy also requested the council to charge them a monthly rate for Hie water used in their forge boiler.—The letter was referred to the Water Committee for a report.

ilr W. Sanderson, contractor for tho construction of tho sanitary cart, wrote informing tho council that it was ready for delivery. ° Tho Water Officer wrote asking to be supplied with a new lin meter, the old one being beyond repair.—Referred to the Water Committee with power to act.

Mr V. Sutton wrote complaining that stone was being taken from his section at Wickliffe terrace, and asking payment for same.—The letter was referred to the "Works Committee ifor a report.

A request from Mr J. W. Lang, manager of the sanitary farm, asking .to ba permitted to keep two cows was declined in the meantime. The Works Committee reported that since last meeting the inspector and daymen had been employed quarryng stone lor street repairs, and had spent a deal of. time in street unci channel cleaning.—Adopted. Tho Sanitary Committee reported that two men had been employed for more than n week preparing for tho now sanitary arrangements at the waggon-house. The inspector had reported making an inspection of all closets re the sanitary pans. Tho now arrangement comes into lorct on October I.—The report was received and adopted.

Tho Finance Committee in its report recommended the payment of accounts amounting to £92 5s 3d. The receipts from all sources since last meeting had amounted to £166 73 Id.—Adopted.

The Lighting Committee in its report recommended that the Gas Company be* written to with roference to tho defective lighting at tlio Eand Rotunda.—Adopted. The Reserves Committee reported on the sales of corporation lcaseholds'on September 23, and stated that section 223, 233, end 273 were again taken up by the present lessees, tho first, two named at a slight advance; while section 253 was leased by Mrs Margaret Mnwson, of Purakanui, at the upset rental of £1 per annum. The old courthouse had been leased to Mr J. Johnson for 14 vears at an annual rental of £52, and section 2'J, block IV, North-East Harbour and Blueskin district, to Mr W Barbei, o! Purakanui, at lGs per acre.—The report was adopted. The Water Committee reported that Mr S. Perry had signed a deed giving the council the power of carrying a supplemental water supply across his ground to tlio reservoir and tho water rights held by him, for which he had been paid".—Adopted. On tho motion of Cr Tait, the council proceeded to strike a special rate for sanitary purposes of 3d in the pound for six months from October 1, 1903.

The balance sheets for the current year were adopted. '
