FOOTBALL.
SOUTHLAND DEFEATS CANTER; BURY. (Per United Press Association.) INVERCARGILL, September 30. The eleventh- intorprovinoial football Canterbury v. Southland, played to-day, was won by Southland by 16 points to 6. Southland won the toss, and played with a fresh south breeze, which materially assisted .them in tho first spell. The game throughout was fast and open, and the raiting forwards exhibited much bote form than was expected. In Wie scrums they heat the local men, but were outclassed in • the loose, though tllioy fairly held their own ou the line-out. The -backs played a "freelance" game, which was effeotive in spoiling tho local backs' passing, but it tool the sting out of their own attack, the players not -being able 'to g«t into thoir places at tho right time to take their passed Southland's scores wore the results of combined passing rushes, from which Reid scored threo tries and Jenkins one, while Jlausoii potted a goal. For Canterbury, scored a clever try from an opening made by himself, and Deans got over as a result of a good passing rush. In -the second spell the Canterbudy players, taking full advantage of tho wind, iwre continually in Southland's territory, and had their passing been woll direoted at least two more tries could liavo 'boon added to their score. Mr 13. Harris (of Duncdin) controlled tho game with satisfaction to both sides.
Our own correspondent telegraphs:— Byrne, Turtill, Lavery, and Fraser were the pick of the rear division of tlie visitors, the former, a boy weighing 3st 101b, being particularly brilliant. Fraser paved his side repeatedly, and had it not been for his fine line kick 3 and the number of dangerous rushes he stopped no doubt Southland's score would have been increased. Turtill, on the- wing, used his kicking powers t> much advantage, both wijh and against the wind. Southland' forwards were ably led by C. Purdue, and all wprked well. Stead, Reid, and Murphy did .the lion's share of the work for tho backs.. Perry took Robinson's place in the front-row, while D. Fraser filled Ward's place at five-eighths At the end of tho second spell good passing between Byrne, Lavery, Fisher, and Deans ended in tlie'latter scoring a grand .try. This was one of the finest passing rushes of the day, and they_ thoroughly deserved tlio applause they received. Lavery failed with tho attempt at goal, and lime sounded, leaving tie score—Southland 16 points; Canterbury, 6.
