PERSONAL NOTES.

Tho City Council at its meeting on Wednesday evening' appointed Mr Robert Hay, M.1.C.E., consulting engineer to the Dunedin City Corporation.

Mr G, Hunt, of South Dunedin, home missionary, has been appointed to the charge of the Ross Presbyterian Church.

At Mr Johnston's tailoring establishment; Port Chalmers, yesterday, Mr D. Fogo was presented by his shopmates with a silver-mounted walking stick, suitably inscribed, on tho occasion of severing his connection with tho firm in order to start business on his own account at Mosgiel. Mr Fogo carries with him all good wishes that with his usual honesty and straightforwardness ho will be successful in hia new undertaking.

A complimentary social was tendered to Mr W. Hanson (of London) by tho members of Trinity Chuioh choir on Wednesday evening. Tho function, which took place in the church hall, tastefully decorated for the occasion, was of a most enjoyable nature. Tho Rev. P. W. Fairclough welcomed Mr Hanson back to Dunedin on "behalf of the choir and'church, and also assured liim of the p'.easure that all bis friends felt at the notable suecoss achieved by Mrs Manson in the Old Country. Mr Manson,. who was warmly received, stated the pleasure ho felt at being back amongst his Dunedin friends again, and in a chatty speech gave an interesting account of his recent trip through South Africa. With regard to Mrs Manson, he said that his friends would be glad to hear that her services wero in very great demand, and that she was at present booked ahead as far as April next. Songs were contributed by Mrs C. P. Edgar and Mr W. Manson (accompanist, Miss E. Hartley); a recitation by Miss Lily Bremner; a reading by Mr S. Hallett; and a gleo by tho choir. Tho gathering terminated by tho singing of " Auld lang syßo " and cheers for Mr and Mrs Manson.

Tho incipient fire which occurred ill Messrs Scoullar and Chisholm's furniture factory in Rattray street on Wednesday night was discovered by Mr Bolton, o£ the Telegraph Department, nnd in recognition of hie services in saving a serious loss the firm yesterday moniing sent him a cheque for f5.
