GOLF CHAMPIONSHIP MEETING.

(Feb United Fbiss Associatiox.)

NAPIER, September 3.

Tho golf championship meeting at Waio hiki to-day was favoured) with fine weather, although tho wind was still stronger and colder than pleasant. There'was a very large attendance of spectators iu the morning, when the Open Handicap Match against "Bogey" wao played. There wero 74 entries for this event. The Bogey scoro is generally reckoned a pretty •stiff one, but two players—Harold' (of Wangaiiui) and Nicolaus (of Palmerston North)—. tied with Bogey and with cach other. Nicolaua made a very fine score on Wednesday afternoon, and his match,' with A. Duncan this afternoon, will bo watched Avith great interest. •Ho lias, sinco his arrival in Napier, put up a record for several holes, and is undoubtedly ono of tho best drivers among the numerous competitors. H. Gillies 1 down, and Pare Keiha, Gould, and Leckio 2 down, were the next in the Bogey Matcli, the players halving six holes and being even on the fourteenth. In the afternoon the second round of the Championship was played, when A. Duncan defeated Harman somewhat easily. Harold put down Gordon after a fairly even game, and Hooper was a little too strong for H. J. Smith. Kurepo Tareha. and Kawhi are the only local players left in tho event. The best gamo of the afternoon was that between J. C. Gillies and J. C. Bidwill (Wairarapa), which turned; out a much more even game than was expected, and aroused great enthusiasm. The Wairarapa representative is a young player, and it is believed this is only his second season, but he has shown excellent form. While Gillies has been hardly playing his best, Bidwill went away with a strong lead, his driving being rather mcro effective than Gillies's, while his putting was specially fine. Gillies, however, gradually worked up to him, and finished by beating him at tho last hole but ono. Neither player drove off well, and Gillies 'with Ilia second shot struck a wire, which cost him the first hole. Bidwill made a magnificent putt, winning with 5. Bidwill's second drive was splendid, landing him close to thebuuker, while Gillies got closo to tho fence, and lost a stroke. Bidwill won the second hole with 4, 2 up. Gillies won the third hole in 4. Gillies had the advantage of the approach at tlifi fourth lio'.e, but Bidwill stymed him on the green, and tho hole was halved—Bidwill 1 lip.' Bidwill won tho fifth liolo in 5, 2 up, and the sixth hole in 5, 3 up, and the seventh hole in 5, with. Bidwill 2 up. Gillies won tho next with 8, Bidwill being 3 up, and the following lio'.e iu 5. The young player was thus 2 up at tho halfway hole. Tho next Gillies won in 3, leaving his opponent 1 up following. Tho hole was halved in 5. Gillies won the twelfth hole in 4, and this left the two players equal. Tho thirteenth hole was halved iu 5, the players being still level. Tho fourteenth hole was also halved. Gillies was improving his form at every stroke, while tho Wairarapa player neeraed not quite so steady as at the start. The fifteenth hole was halved in 5, and the sixteenth hole Gillies won in 5. At the seventeenth holo Bidwill got the advantage on tho second 6hot, but then missed the approach and allowed Gillies to win, 2up and 1 to play. Ib was a great game, and Bidwill deserves tho highest credit for his performance. He is ono of tho coming champions beyond doubt,
