EDUCATIONAL STATISTICS.

The quarterly returns of attendance for the period ended 31st March, 1903, which have been compiled by the secretary of the Education Board, show that there were 217 schools in operation in this district, employing 192 male and 322 female teachers. Tho number of pupils on the roll at the beginning of the quarter was 18,681, and at the end of the quarter 20,04-7, comprising 10,317 boys and 9730 girls. Tho average attendance was 8980 boys and 8344 girS, making a total of 17,324, being 485 less than the total for the previous quarter, and 167 less than for the March quarter of 1902. The averages at the city and suburban schools wore:—Kaikorai, 615; George Street, 585; Forbury, 581; Albany Street, 524; Normal, 523; High Street, 523: Arthur Street, 498'; Union Street. 484; Caversham, 473; Momington, 405; North-East Valley. 388; Macaudrew Eoad, 379; Green Island, 289; Kensington, 254; Ravensbourne, 200; St. Clair, 125; Anderson's Bay, 114; Wakari, 67. The attendances at the District High Schools Were: Port Chalmers, 439; Lawrence, 269: Balclutha, 263;- Mosfliel, 265; Tokomairiro, 216: Palmerston, 206; Tapanui, 183; Naseby, 172; Hampden, 149. The attendances at Oamaru were: South School, 375; North, 269; Middle, 252. During the quarter a household Echool was started at Puketoi.
