CHEISTCHU.RCH, April 27 At a meeting oi the Canterbury College Board of Governors to-day i! was resolved that the gallery of the public- library should bo open, to ladies only, and £70 be spent in furnishing it. The board adopted the report of the College Aid, Finance, and Estate Committees on the propo&h of the Government with regard to fre-e secondary education. Tho report stated: (I) Thai 46 scholars ore now received at ths Boys' High School; (2) that this number approximates very nearly to tho first portion of ths Government proposal of one free scholar to each £50 of iwt revenue devoted to teaching in high schools; (5) that the hoard he recommcudnl !o increase free scholarships on lhat basis, and that further.increases ba made from lime to time as occasion re(jniiw, and it is found that neewsary accommodation for sucli increase.! exists; (4) th:il so fnr as liijli schools in Clm'stchureh are.concerned, tho hoard does not *<!» its way at present to accept as Government pupils at £6 per hoacl all pupils passing the Sixth Standard who present themselves, A meeting of houscholdon in tho West Ohristchurch school district (his evening paeed a motion deeply deploring the attitude of tho Board of Governors of Canterbury College, with regard to secondary education, ami urging on it the necessity of accepting the- Government scheme, until a bettor one is devised.- ■ ■
