(Received April 27, at 7.55 a.m.) Miss Florence Balgarnie, on being interviewed, said that during the 24 hours since she had landed in Sydney sho had seen more signs of poverty, misery, dirt, drunkenness, and out-of-workness than during tie whole 12 months she had spent in New Zealand. "You never," she said, "see a working man in New Zealand sitting by the sido of the road eating with unwashed hands. A working man there is the aristecrat of the country. He hns raised himself to a standard of comfort I never remember to have seen anywhere else. Again, one doesn't see the extreme cf riches; nor, on the other hand, people in rags. There is not that aloofness nor separatediicss between the classes that is noticeable elsewhere. I was impressed by the simplicity of life in New Zealand. They take people more for what they are than for what they are worth. The fact of the Sunday Closing Act -eing to a large eztont a dead letter had had much to do with rotisiug the prohibition sentimont. The success of the movement was largely due to the women's vote."
