HARVEST THANKSGIVING SERVICES.

The harvest thanksgiving sen-ices which I were held in the Salvation Army Barracks, Dowling street, last evening were very largely attended, and wore of the most enthusiastic and heartiest description. The main hall had been specially prepared for the occasion, and much time ami troublo > had been devoted to making it look attrac- ; tive. Festoons of twisted straw rope had '■ teen suspended across the building and along its sides, and the stage had been so ] arranged as to represent a field of stand- j ing corn. Fruit and flowers had aleo boen introduced in the work of decoration, and the general effect was exceedingly pretty. ! Several nymns wcro sung, and prayer was offered with all tho earnestness characteristic of the Army. Songs specially suited to the j service were sung at intervals by members ' of the Army with good effect, and the hand contributed in a large measure to the ; harmony of the evening. Major Oumming.l, 1 with a good (leal of truth, in speaking of tho hand, said the Army had no need to i ho ashamed of the music played by it in the streets. The singing company of the Army, numbering about a dozen, gave some part ( tinging', which proved very enjoyable, tho j jnusic being very correctly and tastefully j enng: and two of the sisters contributed the ! iluet "Rich will the harvest be." Major ; : Cummings, who conducted the eervico. made j an eloquent appeal be/ore its close to those j ' who had not already made a public acknov,-- ; lodgment of their sins and who desired I' salvation to come forward, and the appeal | was not without result. To-ni;ht Hie chil- ' drcn wiM present a progrsmm" of music and ; , recitations, to-morrow night the band gives i a musical evening, and Wednesday night will be'givon tip to tho "juvenile songsters" i 1 of South Dnnedin. )
