UNFORTUNATE COOTAMUNDRA.

(Received April 27, at 1 a.m.) Following close on the heels of n- flood, Cootamuudra had a startling visitation of ail opposite character in the early hours pf Saturday morning. AVhat is described by the few eye-witnesses who saw it as an immense ball of fire, accompanied by a rushing sound resembling thunder, struck one of the main streets, and traversed it for a considerable distance, unroofing and wrecking buildings in the track, destroying the telegraph wires, and working general havoc. The people rushed into the streets in their uightclothes, paiu'c stricken. The Commercial Hotel was almost demolished, and the Globe Hotel and ! a number of other buildings badly damaged. There were many narrow escapes. Some persons were buried and slightly hurt in the debris, but no ene was seriously injured. The damage is estimated at £suoo. The affair lasted only a few seconds. Heavy rain was falling at the time.
