REID AND GRAY'S PICNIC.

Thic firm's fifteenth annual picnic wa3 held at Lake Waihola on Saturday. The weather was ideal, and about 400 journeyed by special train to this favourite water resort. The Mosgiel Brass Band were in attendance, and ircovidcdi enjoyable music. Toys iu abundance were provided for tho boys and girls, and , tho firm maintained their well-earned reputation for seeing that tho young people were well provided for. All the toys and prizeswere tho gift of tho firm to the Pionic Committee, and at the conclusion of the prizegiving by Miss Gray three hearty cheers were given for Mr James Gray, and members of tho firm, and also for the committee who, with the energetio secretary (Mr David Heid), did their work satisfactorily. The committee are • indebted to Messrs J. Wilkie and Co., Evening Star Company, Bell Tea Company, Misses Paterson (Waihola), and other friends for assistance given. Boating on the lake, games in groat variety, and a good spdrts programme filled in. the day very enjoynbly. A cricket match, Clerical Staff v. All Comers, resulted in a win for the former by 8 runs on the first innings, Mr J. H. Boor (of U.S.A.) and Mr , :Duncan Holmes (Gore) showing great form with the willow, and Messrs George Gray and J. Dick trundled with deadly effect. A lesson wa3 learned from the recent visit of the Englishmen, as none of the bowlers' averages suffered by catches being dropped. An enjoyable day was spent, and all Teached Dunedin at 8 p.m., satisfied with their day's outing. Tho sports programme resulted as follows:— Apprentices' Race.—MTaggart 1, Dray 2. Girls' Race—A. Patterson 1, E. Myers 2. Medley Race.—J. Smith 1, E. Todd 2. Single Ladies' Race.—Miss Fraser 1, Miss Smith 2. j Threading the Needle.—Mr and Miss 'Smith. Reid and Gray's Handicap.—M'Taggart 1, M'Auley 2, Smith 3. Married Ladies' (Employees' Wives) Race.— Mrs Richardson 1. Married Ladies' (open) Race.—Mrs M'Cormack 1, Mrs Dean 2. Three-legged Rnce.—Jenkins andJDray. Married Men's Race.—Dunn 1, Hogan 2. Sack Race,—M'Dougall 1, Smith 2.
