THE JAMMING OF STEAMERS' SCREWS.
10 THE EDITOK. Sir,—l have read tho 9xtract published in the Times on the sth inst. from a resident at Groymouth. I believe I hikl a position in tho Star of the South at the time he speaks of. What ho states may to a certain extent bo perfectly correct, but probably he forgots he is giving his skipper away. There was no occasion on that dark night to be among tho rocks. There was probably mora of sarcasm than anything else in the cap. tain's remarks. Certainly such mistakes do happen, unfortunately. It goes without saying that it is ridiculous to compare the powerful engines of tho Elingamito with tlioso of the Star of the South. Those who have travelled by tho old boat will doubtless smile at the comparison, for more reasons than one. Tho writer could instance many " close shaves," but it was little thanka to tho engines that wo got out of our difficulty. This was finally and conclusively evidenced by. hor bones being laid up on tho beach at Greymouth.— I am, etc., Milton, March 6. T. A.
