TEMPERANCE MEETING AT THE FLAT.
The series of Sunday ovening temperance mooting;) promoted by a sub-committee of the Tcmperance Reform Council was continued nt South Dunedin on Sunday night, when several temperanoe advocates addressed a pomewhat sparse gathering in the local Town Hall. Mr Wright, ono of the candidates at the forthcoming Licensing Committee election presided, and was supported on the platform by the Revs. RMaokie, J. Ward, Mr (*. Reid, Mr D. White (of Southland), a-nd others. The principal speaker of the evening was Mr White, who referred'to the great advance made by the Temperance party in New Zealand during recent years, and referred to the result? of carrying prohibition in the Mataura electorate, From this point they would move onward, sweeping the traflio in front of them till it was driven out of the colony. The speaker then went on to refer to_ the necessity of . electing a licensing committee in Caversham, pledged to a 25 per cent, reduction of licenses. Ho proceeded to quote a harrowing list of oases from police records illustrative of tho evils of drink in England, ami said that such a state of things would come alxiut in New Zealand if the traffio was not suppressed. Tho Rev. J. Ward also advocated working for a " Temperance " licensing Committee. It was announced that on tho following Sunday night Mrs Shepherd, Mrs Atkinson. and others representing the New Zealand Temperance Union would givo addresses.
