It is because good works of rofcrcnco are really necessary nowadays that "The Times" has been enabled to offer the " Encyclopedia Britannica" and The Century Dictionary & Cyclopedia & Atlas at ' such low prices. It only the limited class who buy luxuries could be expected to nurchase those books, it would bo' impracticable to sell a vast number of copies, and it is only by printing on a large scare that low prices can bo attained. Selected by the editors of the " Encyclopedia Britannica" to write the article on " Philology" in vol. xviii of that work, he is already known to those who have read tho article in question as a writer of the groatest dircctnoss of thought and clearness.
