No time was lost in faking the necessary measures to ascertain the cause of tho accident, and prompt steps were taken to repair the damage. By using tho hydraulic plant with which tho dredge is vorßod, the paddock was pumped out, and on Thursday everything was in readiness, as far as the position of the dredge is concerned, to repair the -dapiage. This, it may be said, is somewhat serious, consisting of the displacement of two and a-half inch planks. It is expected, however, that the dredge will be able to make afresh start at the beginning of the week. Mr Fox, who, on being apprised of the accident, at once left Dunedin for Waipori. speaks in very high terms of the snlenditl services rendered by the dredgemaster (Mr 1. G. Jefferson) and crew. -They had a hard, disagreeable task to perforin, but they went through it willingly, and did not. spare themselves in carrying out the work. The adjourned extraordinary general meeting of the Voltaic Dredeing Company will bo held in tho company's office this afternoon. A' meeting of shareholders in the Lone Valley Gold Dredging Company will bo held this (Monday) evening. DUNEDIN STOCK EXCHANGE. For the third timo last week the Dimcdin Stock Exchange met on Saturday without transacting any business. The demand for shares, was as frood as usual, but there was very little alteration from previous quotations, buyers refusing to move up, while sellers would not accept less than they formerly wanted. In all probability the market will be quiet for the next few weeks, but as soon as there are indications that tho river is approaching its permanent winter level there should he a revival in business, as good returns will be looked for with regularity. The river was steady at a height of oft lliu above tho normal mark at Alexandra 011 Saturday morning. The blueg'um was then offered, and fell to the bid of Mr H. 11. Leary (as agent for a dredging company). The machinery was sold in one lot, and was bought by Mr George Leslie (on behalf of a syndicate) for fSOO. It has lion been placed in the hands of Mi Wm. Adams for private sale.

MACCI-lARLTON DREDGING COMPANY. (From Our Own Correspondent.) GORE, March 7. The annual meeting of shareholders in the Maccliarlton Dredging Company was held in Gore last night. Dr Donald (chairman of directors) presided, and six othor shareholders were present. The annual report and balance sheet (already published) were taken as read and adopted on the motion of the chairman, seconded by M. Boiv'er. Messrs Collins aud- Wallis (the retiring, directors) were re-elected, aud the directors", fees for the ensuing year were fixed at £65. Mr E. Dewar waare-elected auditor at a fee of £5 ss, THE WEST COAST. (Frosi Our Owi* Correspondent.! GREYMOUTH, March 5. week closed with the share market dull. North Beaches were in demand at 25s Gd to 265, and for some unexplained reason Bignell's No Towns were inquired after from Dunedin, Christchurch, and Wellington. Coast folk are inquiring what does it mean. Much surprise is expressed at the determination to wind up Red Jacks. There is a general impression on the Coast that a complete funk has been established at Dunedin and Christchurch, and that in consequence shareholders there are prepared to sacrifice all their interests in order to get rid of further risks. Here the very opposite feeling is entertained, and new ventures are being entered into. So ifar as the Red. Jacks is concerned the property will be eagerly snapped up. The ground never had a fair trial, failure being the result of inefficient machinery, unforeseen misfortune, etc. Ihe North Beach dredge, although on the main run during the week, experienced a good (leal of trouble with the machinery, the actual working hours being 112 for 70oz. She will continue to work for a couple of weeks more, but her average for that term will not- possibly be so high as she will be oIT the lead. The dredge will then lay up to have a new screen put in, the old one being nearly worn out, and causing much trouble. _ Tho No Town dredge, which has been repairing and replacing parts of the machinery, is expected to get a start to-nlorrow. The Mahinapua dredge, recently purchased by Mr J. Tav'or, got a start on Thursday last. Since becoming owner Mr Taylor has spent about £700 in alterations. He states that the ground is now fairly well opened, and that he should have a good run this week. TV cost, of working should not be more than £35 per week, ans as the capital invested is only about £1500 the investment is reckoned to bo a good one. Tlio owner has been offered par for five or six shares, each share representing £100. The Pactolus No. 2 dredge got 420z sdwt for 135 hours, and the Mosquito 40oz for 127 hours. There are no new developments in cither claim. The Kohinoor dredge (jbtained 2Soz ior' 110 hours, and the Prince of Wales 17oz for 101 hours. Both machines worked badly, several breaks taking place. Tho Blackwater River dredge got S3oz 15dwt for 120 hours. The wash is improving a good deal, but timber is showing on the 4ace, and giving a.-good deal of trouble. Tho Shellback dredge obtained 19oz 2dwt for 120 hours. The ground is deepening, and the dredgemasfer believes ho is coming on a good run of go!2. The Aldincrn drfdge obtained QBoz 9dwt for 129 hours. She will be on solid ground next week which is expected to give better results. The Leviathan return is lOoz lGdwt. Tho machine was working-all week in pug, with little or no gravel. The Commissioner's Flat dredge only worked 30 hours during the week for soz 12dwt. Several Darts of the machine gave way, and tho financial prosnects are nee too good, although the ground will undoubtedly pay. The Greenstone Creek dredge obtained 18oj!. Bdwt, the Greenstone Three-mile dredge 290z, and the Junction Ooz Sdwt. The latter dredge has run into almost barren drift. NOTES FROM REEFTON. (Frosi Oun Own Correspondent.) REEFTON, March 7. The Alpine Company's mine manager reports:—We started to crosscut in No. 7to cut eastern track. We have extended it 10ft for the week. The contractors have extended the level 9ft, making the total distance GOft. The shaft contractors have sunk lift for the week, making a total distance of 53ft. March 8. A party has taken over the Buller dredgo on tribute for three months. Quartz mining generally is on the improve in the district. The Keeu-it-Dark Company has struck reef in tho low level, and it is said the atone will keep the battery going five years. Goocl stone has also been got' in the Industry mine. The manager of the Big River Company reports for the week:—The drive has been extended 9ft, with an average of Ift of stone. The west drive has also been, extended Oft on a good track, with a- little broken stone mixed un in it. The total distance driven on the reef is 112 ft Gin.. iHE PRICE OF LEAD. Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright MELBOURNE, March 7. (Received March 7, at- 10.11 a.m.) In consequence of tho rise in the price of lead, there is a probability of the Broken Hill Junction mine restarting work.
