THANKSGIVING SOCIAL. (Fnost Our Own Cop.hesfoxdent.) GORE, March 5. A largo thanksgiving social was hold by the Mataura United Temperance Council last night to mark tho success of the reccnt licensing poll in Mataura. Leaders in the movement wore present from every corner of the electorate. Tho speakers included Mr A. S. Adams (president of the Now Zealand Alliance) the Revs. Walker and Ramsay (Stirling), Messrs Why t ta (temperance organiser) and Baxter (Invercargill). The meeting was very enthusiastic, and during its progress Mr .T. A. Forbes, of Goro, whose persistent advocacy of no-license principles for the last 25 years is largely responsible for the prohibitionists' success in Mataura, was presented with a handsomely illuminated address and well-filled purse of sovereigns. Mrs Forbes received a presentation from tho lady workers in tho electorate. Mr Forties's work was warmly eulogised by the speakers, who considered that the no-license causo had no stronger champion in tho colony. A GAY DECEIVER. A young man named Donnelly, alias Preston, alias Lieutenant Grey Neville Montgomery, who moved in Gore society for a few days on the representation that lio was a Latin tutor, a son of Bishop Montgomery, of Tasmania, and generally gave out that he had a good deal of " blue blood " in his veins, was brought before Mr Cruiekshank, S.M., to-day on three charges of obtaining money (£3) by false pretences. Montgomery had a simple, ingenious manner with him, and many other good yarns nrR abroad regarding tho success of his " '.iH'Vg in" exploits. Ho explained 'o 1

that ho spent tlio money purchasing working clothes for a situation, but his boss discharged Tiim after five minutes' toil, alleging that he was no good. The situation was navvymg on tho Charlton Creek tail race. Ho was sentenced to one month's imprisonment with hard labour.
