Ecclesiastics from all parts of the world and 70,000 people took part in the service at the Basilica. The Pope was in good health but pale, and his voice had a marked hoarseness as he intoned the Te Deum. Peals of bells were rung _by 493 churches in Rome. Cardinal Gibbons, on behalf of the American hierarchy, clergy, and laity sent Marconi a message from Cape Cod to Poldliu, Cornwall, for transmission I to Rome, conveying congratulations to the Pope.'
