HAWKE'S BAY CALEDONIAN SPORTS.

(Pee United Press Association.) NAPIER, February 28. The annual Caledonian sports were held on the Recreation Ground to-day in tho presence of over 3000 spectators. The weather was beautifully fine, the fields were large throughout, and soma very fast times were reoorded. An unfortunate accident occurred in the first heat of tho One-mile Bicyole Handicap, seven out of the 12 starters coming to grief. Holland and Nattrass (of Wellington) both received nasty bruises, the former having a very bad face cut; while Nattrasa had his elbow slightly put out, and had to be taken to the hospital. D. Smith, the well-known Queensland runner, was a competitor in the Mile and Half-mile Handicaps, but: was not in form, and failed to get a placo in either. The Mile was won by E. J. Farland from the 130 yard 3 mark in the fast time of 4min 19 2-sseo; S. Bames bc-ing second. A protest .was entered against the winner on tho ground that a complete list of his performanew had not been sent in. 6. Baird, a local runner, with 45 yards start, won the Half-mile in the exceedingly fast time of lmdn S7sec. D. Smith, who was running a olose third, gave up in tho straight. S, Bames won the 440 yds Handioap, and E. Odium tho 120 yds Handioap, 'L. B. Webster, of New Plymouth, put up a good record in the amateur handicaps, winning the 100 yds from 2yds behind scratch in XOsec, the 220 yds from scratch in 22 2-sseo, arid the 440 yds from scratch in 51sec. A. W. Missen won the 220vds Handicap (open). Tho Mile Bioycle Handicap was won by H. Lloyd, and the Tliree-mile Handicap by C. 0. .Willis. J. M'Kechnie won the various piping competitions and the sword dance; M'Kenzio Forbes winning the other dancing contests. A, Carlson won the wrestling, weight and shot putting, and tossing tho caber. .. . I
