TWENTY-FIVE YEARS' CASUALTIES, i ■ Somfc remarkable figures are contained in the official record of shipping casualties issued reeently by tho Board of Trade. This elaborate compilation of statistics, which occupies 170 pages, brings tho melancholy story of tho sea,' down to Juno 30, 1901. From table*) which appear in the record, we learn that during the last 25 years 6770 wrecks and casualties to ships belonging to th-5 United Kingdom have been attended with fatal results to 41,803 persons, of whom • '36,038 were members of the orews and 5770 were passengers, pilots, or other persons not on articles of agreement. The Kimo grim; register informs us that the average annual loss during the same period was 1672 persons of all sorts and conditions. The statistics, Howevei, furnish us with a consoling comparison for the year 1900-01, during frhieh interval only 1011 persons ii' 561 below the averago for the preceding quarter cohtury succumbed to the perils o£ the deep. The sank welcome decrease is observable by comparison of the total of seamen an<l passengers lost in sailing vessels during the last 25 years—namely, 938—with that of tho 12 months 'indicated—viz., 586. The record winds up with the remarkable fapt that the total loss of life from sea casualties to vessels of all kinds belonging k , British possessions abroad was, in . 1900-01, 269, as compared with 642 in the previous year.
