IMPERIAL PARLIAMENT
THE IRISH LAND QUESTION. Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright. LONDON, February 26. (Received Feb. 27, at 8.12 a.m.) Mr J. B. Redmond moved an amendment to the Address-in-Boply, appealing to the Government to seize the present unexampled opportunity of settling the land difficulty on the lines of the Dublin Conference. He warned Mr Wyndham that tho State would be expected to make a free grant of the difference between the sums tho tenants were willing to pay and what the landlords would accept. Mr J, Morley estimated that a free grant of £22,000,000 and a loan of £100,000,000 woula be required. It was possible that economies in administration would largely recoup the free grant, and lie believed it would not cost the State mora than £50,000 a year. But even if the land question were settled, the Home Rule question would remain. Mr Wyndham declined to make a premature pronouncement. He referred sympathetically to the Dublin Conference as encouraging the hope that Ireland's despondency would be removed. Mr W. O'Brien said that-the adoption of the compromise would remove the last obstacle to Home Rule by creating a united Ireland. The amendment was withdrawn. A BXE-ELECriON. February 27. (Received Feb. 28, at 0.53 a.m.) Mr Buchanan (L.) has been elected M.P. for East Perthshire, a seat rendered vacant by the resignation of Sir J. G. Kinloch.
