Ho rushed to" tho door, which he found locked, and heard a couple of men escape through the front of the. house, and drivo away in a buggy, which was evidently waiting in readiness for them. They only secured a few coppers and a quantity of cignrettcs. The policeman, Long held a revolver and a partially burned match in his hands. It .is evident that the burglars became aware that lie was coming, and were waiting for him, shooting him immediately lie passed the door. An attempt had been mado to burgle the hotel a fortnight previously, and Long undertook to keep a sharp look-out.
