A BARQUE ABANDONED.
AUCKLAND. January 8. Tilaml iiok'3 hy Hie Hiwroto, which nrrivrri to-day, states that the barque Mnlmeu. 595 tnis, londed with 800 tons of coora from Nukualofa to Europe, was abandoned off tlio Kcrmadecs, as she was makinpr water ami there was tlien 10ft in t!io sliip'e hold. Captain Xnlsou and the rrew took tn tlio hoatf, nnd landed on 'Sunday Mnnd. Findin? no inhabitants, they left for Toiijr.i. wliero they arrived aftor a voyage of 12 dny.s. The master reports that the vessel encountered squally weather and a lipnvy head eea, which caused her to leak. The crew suffered p 0 hardship, the boats being m>ll provisioned.
Further particulars as to th» abandonment of the. barque Malve.m show that on December 13 there were 10ft of water in the ship's holds. On that day it was also discovered thnt portion of the cargo had eau|?ht fire. The flames rapidly spread, and soon envnloped the whole ship. It was decided to abandon the vessel, and the captain and crew accordingly put off in tho ship's boats.
