By Australian banks: Fixed for six months,'l£ per cent, por annum; \i months, 3 per ce-nt. per annum. The new year lias opened quietly, and business can scarcely be said to have, resumed its usual conryo since the holidays. There are scarcely any market fluctuations to record, an , .! from the point of view of i Irade tho past tiiree weeks have been very uneventful. Tl:' , . , uphey market remains in practically the same position, although the issue of the Drainage Hoard debentures should abjorb some of the surplus local capital. Of the £200,000 loan authorised,, fenders are being railed for a first issue of £40,000, roturiiablu' on March 9 next, bearing interest at d^.per cent. j'liomwi-: ir.uiKET. Owing to .very, heavy supplies coming forward of Oamuni and Canterbury kidneys tire -bottom , has fallen out of the potato market, and sale 3 ,hav;> been made as low as £6 per tcm. \\\n\>;. inferior lines realised only £5. The markot for dairy produce U inclined to be easier. Cheese is coming forward more freely. Akaroa h quoted at 6d and factory (largo and medium) at 6|d. Dairy butter is in plentiful supply at 6£d to 7d. Farmers' separator, 9d. First grade factory hut-tor still , nominally quoted at lid per lb for bulk amd-lljd for pats. The market has 'been cleared of eggs at 10d, and sales 'arc "reported at lid. Pigs are very scarce alid in great demand. Baceiners (up to 1601 V. 5Jd; overweights, 3£d- to 4Jd. Bacon continues in short supply and the niarlfof'is 'firiri.' Prime rolls, hams, 10d. Oaten sheaf chaff is easier, and can he quoted at up to £5 10s per tcj). SW..\T>STVr?9. The brcadstuffs market keeps firm, hut there is almost an entire absence of business. The'pnwpnof of ,i late harvest makes holders indisposed to give way in tho matter of values, whilst buyers seem disposed to wnrk down to th"ir last ba? and vie Mani-

folia flour for mixing rather than pay current rates. It is not expected that the market for the new wheat will open /or at least two months, although a few early parcels may be offering- in six weeks' ■ time. It is anticipated that thp ne,v wheat will open high, and in face of'a gradually frilling market millers are lik'ely to operate with extreme caution. In the absence of business current quotations remiiim unchanged—viz.: Hunter's and Tuscan, 5s 3d to 5s 4d. on trucks, Canterbury sidings, ccjual to 5s 7d to Ss 8d Dunedin: velvet. 5s 6il to Sβ Bd, on trucks, equal to 5s 10tl to 6? Duncdin. Another 50 tons of Manifobjn flour—Lake of tho Woods brand—is offering at £13 per ton not,' duty naid,' The New 7i'alamcl-' Floiirmillors' Association's tariff remains unchanged at £13 per ton for sacks, £13 10s for 100's, £13 15s for 50's. and £U for 25's. Bran is quoted arjE6 and iiolliird at £6 10s, but the latter is in good demand and very scarce —in fact, orfipw are heint; refused. There is an inquiry for outs for shipping nt nn to 2s Bd--ex store for B grade, but nothing cam be obtained .it that price. Current quotations'are 2s (f.0.b., sacks in foe B mule, , and 2s Bid (f.0.b., sacks in) for C grade. The first sale of new season's oats in Canterbury, is reported, a line of 1500 bushels of Canadian oats' having changed 'hands at 2s's(l per bushel on'truck's Chertsey. New Southland oats for April delivery have bcrai offered nt 2s per bushel, but in view of tho very large.acreage under crop buyers wilt not look at Ihe offer at the nrice. . Oatmeal is unchanged at £13 10s to £14, according to braad... Chick wheat is still quoted at 4s 5d ex store for be6t samples, and good feed barley at 3s 4d to'Ss 6d. AW. AXD STOUT. (Duty: 2s per-gallon, or 4s per dozen.) . The bold and--unseasonable weather has lessened the dem-atid lor ale and stout. All the leading brsmls are in pood supply. The old. and favourite brand—Tennani's—has once more lieon' placed on tho market, and is quoted nt: Ale—lls 6d to 12s fot quarts, and 7s 3d to 75.6il for pints. Stout—lls to 11s 6d for quart , ;, and 7a to 7s 3d for pints. In other brands the following is tho agents' list'jof 'prices, the quotations being for , ordinary lots per dozen quarts, all d.iib, paid:—.Ale: Read's Dog'i.Head. 13s* to" 13s 6d: Porter's-Bull Dog, 12s 6d; Poster's 12e: Burke's 12s; Yotineer's. Us 6d:' H'Ewan's, Us; Ihler »nd Bell's, 10s"'6d." Stout: Read's Dogs Head.. 13s to 13s 6d: Porter's Bull Dog, 12a to 12? 6d; Burke's,, 12s 6d to 12s 9d; Johnson's, Us 6d tq. 125.; Hall's Boar's Head, ■12s; Foster's, Us 9(1. ..BAGOJNG. (Woolpacks anil cornsacks: Free.) There seems every, probability of an improvement in the .value of cornsacks. It may bi>: remembered that owing to the drought in Australia several lines of cornsacks were imported last season from Commonwealth ports .if very low cost. Consequently the market here weakened considerably, and tho bnlk of the direct importations from Caleutta-"ir«re quitted at imdor cost price. • This • year importers have operated. cautiously, and in some instances agents' orders are 'only .half last year's quantity. It is estimatc-d that the carryover is not largo, 'and in the event of a good'harvest a shortage is not an improbability. No relief can be obtained from Australia, as this year's importations for the throe chief centres—Adelaide. Sydney, and Melbourne—only total 17.000 ' bales, as against 70,000 in a normal season. The spot wholesale price of cornsacks at the present.time is from 4s IOJd to 4s lid, and as the Calcutta, .market keens firm the local quotation ia expected to advance. Woolpaeks are quoted nominally at 2s, but little or no business is passing. candi.es. (Duty: Id per lb.) Other prices are unaltered — viz., Electrics, 43d per lb; Adamantines, sd; Brilliants. 5Jd nor lb; Standard, 6Jd per lb; Mining, 6jd per lb. These rates are subject to a eliding 6cale of discount, according to the quantity purchased. In imported candles Price's brands monopolise the inarket, and are in good demand at the following rates:—For London sperms, 6Jd to 6?d per i!> (duty paid), and London wax and paraffins at 6id; De Roubaix Jenar, 7id to 7W ■ 'CEUEXT. (Duty: 2s per barrel.) An average business is doing in cement. For small parcels ox storo quotations remain at 14s to 14s 6d per barrel. A few sales have been made ex wharf at 13s 6d, DRIED FITOITS. (Duty: Currants and raisins, Id per lb: figs, nuts, shell almonds, evaporated npples, prunes, and dates, ?.& per lb; Jordan almonds, 3d per lb; Sicily almonds, free.) In dried fruits, currants and sultanas both show a firm tendency, and prices are likely to be higher rather than lower as the season advances. Currants are still quoted at 3|d to 3Jtl, and sultanas at s|d to 5Jd. Figs aro getting into small compass, and owing to Hie short crop , it will be impossible to replace stocks. Current quotatons are: Layers. 7^l; bags, 6Jd to 62(1; small boxes, 6s 6d to 6s 9d. Seeded raisins are in short supply, an;] prices have advanced to 63 9(1 per dozen for 16oz cartons.
