SPEIGHT AND CO.'S PICNIC.

The members and employees of the. firm of Messrs Speight and Co. and their bottling firm (Messrs Powley and Kcast) held a most successful and enjoyable picnic at Quarantine Island on Saturday, leaving town by the s.s. Express at 9.30, and returning at 6 p.m. Tho weather was perfect, and tho arrangements, in the capable hands of Messrs C. Speight, C. F. Greenslad", W. Dawson. E, M. Greeuslade, H. Adam, and R: Powley, with the assistance of a good committeo, left nothing to be desired. There was an abundance of toys provided for the children, also fruit and lollies. The following races were disposed- of during the day: — Carters' Race.— W. Russell 1, A. M'Chie 2. Coopers and Carpenters' Riice.—lf. Powley 1, D. Paterson 2. : Caskwashors' Race.— J. Freeman 1, R. Harrison 2. Output Cellar Race H. Davis 1, J. Brinsdon 2. Fermenting Cellar Race.— J. Weir 1, J Crutchfielcl 2. Maltsters' Race.-R. Milne 1, H. 2. A splendid race, a.ll bding well together at the finish, Old Buffers' Race.—W. Parley 1, R. Shepherd 2. Married Ladies' Race.—Mrs Bcath 1, Mrs Dickson 2. Single Ladies' Race.-Miss T. Shepherd 1, Miss Dickaon 2. Married Ladies' Race (for employees' wives only).—Mrs Stewart (clock presented by Mr W. Dawson) 1, Mrs Armstrong (work basket) 2, Mrs Andrews (60lb bag sugnr) 3. Wreetling.-'J. Bradley (gold watch presented by Mr C. P. Creenslade) 1, T. Crutchßeld (moonstone ring) 2. Tug-cf-War Married v. Single (for 200 cigars). -The married men won, but all enjoyed a good smoke. ' A special vote of thanks waa passed to the employees and owner of the s.s. Express for tho courtesy shown by them.
