Henry Copeland, Agentgeneral for New South Wales, has been interviewed by a representative of the Daily Chronicle on the question of the importation of Chinese labour on to the Band. Mr Copeland. pointed out that one European miner is worth five Chinamen. He said that the . action of the Band capitalist was simply contemptible. English and Australian workmen had helped to save the mines, and now it was proposed to lmid employment legitimately theirs to a horde of barbarians. The .Agent-general for New South Wales expressed the opinion that if Mr Chamberlain should consent to the importation of this alien labour, his action in that respect would fairly outweigh all the good he has ever done. It would embitter' the whole of Australia and Canada, and those colonies would become the avowed enemies both of Mr Chamberlain him; self and of his Imperial policy..
