The Tyser line steamer Balmoral sailed from Now York for Melbourne, Sydney, and New Zealand ports on the 13th of January, The C.G.S. A largo steamship with a yellow funnel well to tho eastward was reported from the signal station nt Otago Hearts standing north at 6.20 a.m. yesterday. She may bo the Imlraghiri, from the Bluff for AVangamii. The gradual disappearance of tho purely British seaman steadily proceeds. According to an interesting parliamentary report rocently published in London the number of Lascars emnloyed on British ships has risen from 10,835 in 1891, to 13,100 in 1896, and 14,630 in 1901. But there has been a greater /increase in the number of Lnscars in vessels which trade to the From 10,787 in Anril, 1891, the number rose to 14.811 in March, 1901. Tlinrn wore in March, 1901, 130,083 seameri, of whom 33,500 wero Lascars, employed .upon tteam vessels iei the foreign trade, arid the Lasoar.i therefore formed 25.8 per cent, of the total number of seamen on board those vessels'.
