THE NEW YEAR HOLIDAYS.

The New Year was ushered in with bad weather, but fortunately it did not lost. On January 2 it was bright and sunny. The railway traffic in and out of the city was heavy, and the town was full of visitors for the holidays. The chief attraction was the time-honoured Caledonian sports, extending over two daye. The attendance, of the public, was largo, especially on thc-second day. The wrestling competition (l?,st and under) was won-by G. W. Johnston, with H. Thompson second ; tho Caledonian Handicap (of 100 yds) by W. Turnbnll (Byds), with J. Reea (lOJyde) second; the Half-mile Handicap by D. M'Laren (30yds), with D. Morrison (50yds) ■locund; Three-mile Bicycle Handicap, by E. J. Cooko (35yds), with H. Holland (scr) second; Throwjrfg the Hammer, by James Stark (98ft Win), with .T. M'Donald second; Caledonian Handicap (350 yds), by W. Black (18yd3), with 0.- Sl'Laren (12yds) second; Five-mile Bicycle .Race, by A. E. Barker (50yds), with A. Hueston (scr) second. On tho second day, the all-comers' wrestling competition was won by T. Johnston, with J. Dickson second; the Dunctlin Handicap (220 yds), by Thos. Dodds (Byds), with D, M'Larcn second: tho Half-mile Handicap, by J. Burk (55yds), with J). Morrison (45yds) second; the Dunedin Handicap (440 yds), by D. M'Laren (10yds), with T. Dodds second. Great interest centred in the bagpipe music, dancing, and wood-saw-ins; competitions. The Oamarn Caledonian sports were also largely attended, and as good prize-money is alwayn given by this society tho entries are correspondingly large. A record for the ground was put up in tho light hammer event by F. Ford, who threw 116 ft. Sports were also held at Milton, Dunback, and Jliddlemarch.
