SPORTING.

WAIKOTJAITI RACES.

Tlie Waikouaiti Racing Club held their annual meeting on Thursday, oncl but for the fact that the bad weather made matters rather unpleasant for those who attended the gathering would probably havo been the most successful held for a long time.. The early morning was beautifully fine, but the weather afterwards became showery, and shortly after the races commenced there was a very heavy downpour, while during the rest of the afternoon rain fell at frequent intervals. The attendance was, however, good, comparing favourably with that of previous years. The course was a bit heavy, and the times registered were consequently rather slow; but the going was better than, might Jinvo been expected,' considering the nature of the weather recently. . Thore .were no spills dnririg tho day, and the only casualty to the jockeys occurred in the Waikouaiti Cup, when Hunter, tho rider of Bed Banner, struck a post and broke his -collar-bone. At the request of Hunter, .who alleged that his accident was caused by the rider of Cherrystone, the stewards hold nn inquiry into the circumstances, but as tho timo at their disposal was very limited they were not able to finish it. Hunter's, injuries wero attended to by Br Hislop,. of Palmerston. In all the r aces but ono the fields wcro • larger than usual, the exception being the Hawuslrary Handicap, for which only thveo horses faced the starter out of 11' acceptors. There was a good deaf of speculation, and the sum of £1301 was put through the totalisator during the day, as compared with £1237 10s in 1901, the last meeting, for which a permit was granted. In addition to the machine there woro some 10 bookmakers doing business,,each of whom was liconscd.at a feo of £1 Is, and their presence no doubt affected tho amount put through the totalisator. Some good finishes wore seen during tho day, particularly in the trots, both of which Split Ear appeared to have well in. hand; but tho maio seemed to die away in the last chain or so, and was just beaten on the post on each occasion, Tho ptlblio wero not particularly successful in picking tho winners,'and tho dividends were rather above tho average amounts. Some noticeable and commendable improvements have been effected by the club sinco the last meeting. The saddling paddock is now securely fenced off, and a temporary stewards' stand has been erected,-thus enabling a splendid view of the races to bo obtained. Mr A. S. Orbcll,' as judge, had a few close finishes to decide, but nothing to cause him any difficulty in coming to a decision. Mr Gourley, the starter, carried out his duties satisfactorily, getting h's fields away well together. Messrs It. Tcmpleton (secretary), M. Jamicson (clerk of the scales), and P. E. Wilson (who supplied particulars of tho 'investments) were' most courteous 'aud obliging to all with whom they came in contaet, and the, rendered valuable service in ; c.rrying out the duties of tlie day. The Waikouaiti Band, assisted by some of tho Port Chalmers Band, wero present, and rendered several selections in a creditable manner. The following are the detailed results;— ; MAIDEN PLATE, Of 25sovs; second horse Gsovs from tha stakes.
