THE HOLIDAYS.

The New Year holidays passed off fairly satisfactorily. -The weather,, all round, was good,, although on Now Year's Day some heavy showers fell wlie?, ;the forenbon was well advanced, and caused' a good deal of annoyance, to those who. had gone on picnicking expeditions.' In the afternoon, however, the weather cleared, and yesterday, for the most part, was sunny and warm. All the out;.p.f-town attractions were well patronised,,and tho Caledonian' Sports, the chief town attraction, were well attended. • On both days, the business places observed close holiday, and. tho-town bore'a rather deserted; look during the afternoons;- In the evenings the .street* were crowded, whilst the theatres were alw largely attended, last night-particularly so. '''"",' ~- ■ The New Year was ushered in at Port Chalmers ty a- splendid display of fireworks, the ringing of bells, from the • several jclmrches And"ships, and some, appropriate; musio excellently rendered bythe band under Conductor Schnack. At the-last, stroke (if 12 from the town clock on Wednesday night rockets were sent up in quick .suecssion. from the (steamships -Delphic, Tbkomanij Pukaki, and Tavinni, varied by the'.burning of blue Jights and coloured fires, ariU the firing of guais, which was evidently appreciated by; the large concourse of persons who lined the'piers. .The greatest order prevailed,and; with the exception of the dangerous praotice of hoys throwing crackers and other combustibles,' many of theny in people's faces—a' 'proceeding . that /-iyas ' promptly stopped by the passed off pleasantly.., .. •,,.
