CITY COUNCIL REPORTS.

The following reports from the various committees will be considered by the City Council to-night: — The Works Committee recommends that— (1) Tho accounts from the Mornington Borough Council for £4 9s lOd and £52 '10s 7d, for work performed on the Eglinton road, and in connection with the asphalting of footpaths through the Town Belt, be passed for .payment. (2) A sum of £50 be granted-to Messrs Metcalf Bros, for continuance of dust contract beyond their term. (3) The request from Messrs Robertson and Cameron for an increase in the contract price for concrete kerbing ajid channelling be declined, and that the .deposit of £25 lodged with their tender for the work be forfeited. (4) With reference to the construction of concrete channels in the city, that it be authorised to construct by day labour 10 chains of concrete channelling in each ward, and, that a careful record of the cost be kept. The city engineer has been instructed as follows:—To asphalt the footpath on the eastern side of George street, between Duke and Howe street, to its full width, au a cost of £10; grant half-pay to Thomas Duun, south wardsman, during the time he is off work through injury to his hand; erect the Market street weighbridge in Manor street on the south side, between Princes and Bond streets; act as to Mr E. E. Philp's- complaint of the state of the approaches to his residence at Montpelicr; purchase 1000 yds of metal at present contract prices for street maintenance purposes; accept Mt T. Scurr's offer of £2 10s per ton for old bar iron lying in the corporation yard; act re complaint from Chas. Heteley re loss of employment under Mrs Barnes; act as to request from Messrs E. E. Philp and two others for the footpath from Hawthorn avenue to Mr Johnston's residence at Montpellier, to b3 tarred and sanded; act re complaint from Messrs John M'ludoe and five others of the condition of the footpath on the west side of Vogel street between Jotty and Water streets; act re application from Messrs Spence and Dunkley for (lie crossing to their premises in Vogel street, to be gone on with; act re suggestion from Mr John Mitchell for tho construction of a crossing over Princes street in line of Dow-ling street; accept Mr Gregor's tender for repairs to Stuart street weighbridge, at a cost of £14 15s>; act re complaint from Mr A. Bagley of mud tank at corner of Castle and Dundas streets. The town clerk lias been authorised to act in the following matters:—With Mr Fadden re offer from Messrs Meicalf Bros, to supply two drays, and drivers for the quarry; with Mr Fadden in ordering two screens from Sydney; in ordering drill plant for quarry from N. Guthridge (Ltd.), Wellington. The Water Committee reports having requested Professor Park to report on the flow of water from the embankment at'the Ross Creek Reservoir. A requisition for spindles, fans, and stop-cocks (costing £10 4s), for the Water Department has been granted. The Gas Committee begs to report having granted tho following requests from the gas engineer:—(1) To pay the sum of £9 to gasworks employees for extra work performed; (2) to purchase a quantity of three-sixteenths of an inch plate iron for a wrought-iron pipe to connect the new retort house with the new scrubber recently erected, at a cost of about £15; (3) to have two small rooms and passage of his cottage papered. Your committee has offered to supply tar—about 500 gallons (more

or loss)—to the Dunedin arid Suburban Cycling Tracks Committee for repairing the cycling track, at 4d per gallon. Requisitions for supplies to (he gasworks costing £257 12s (3d have been granted. Mr John Leonard's tender for tho purchase of the old iron at the City Gasworks has been accepted at the following prices:—2s 9d per cwt for good ca6t-iron, Is 9d per cwt for fire-bars and burnt iron. Tho Reserves Committee begs 'to report having instructed the city engineer as follows: — To (1) act as to new posts required in the Maori Joad fence; (2) have the building in Princes street South, at present occupied by Mr .T. H. Tenant, repaired at a cost of about £20; (3) aot as to application from tho Otago Football Association for permission for the Rangers Football Club to use portion of the filled-in .portion oi the Southern Market Reserve next season; (4) act, with the chairman, as to application from the Privateers Cricket Club for permission to play on the Asylum Ground during the ensuing season. The application for portion of me Southern Market Reserve for. tramway purposes has been approved. Letters of thanks have been sent to the following for their donations:—To the Botanical Gardens— Milburn Lirae and Cement Company (Ltd.), two saciM cf Milburn guano; Mr Cha.3. Beai (Salwyn, N.E. Valley), two piants. 'To the'city. reserves—Mr James M'lndoe (Fornu.-y road, CaveTsnara),,J-hrep tree shrubs. Permission has been granted to Messrs Wni. Kirk and Alex. Barron, proprietor and manager of the coffee stall in Rattray street, to keep the same open from 5.0 to IS p.m. on Saturdays, and from 1-2 p.m. on Sundays to. 5 a.m. on Mondays, the stall to tie conducted on. tho same lines as by" the previous lessee, and the charge for the license to be.l7s Get per' month. 'Sour committee recommends that the present contract with Sir R. Metcaif for the supply of horse to the Great King Street Fire Brigade Station for the tram of £40 per annum be continued for another 12 months. The Tramways Committee iecommends th a t-j-(l) With 'reference to the permission granted, to, the Dunedin and Roslyn Tramway Company (Ltd.) to extend their lino in Rattray street, 16Jft be substituted for 26$ ft, and that ail other points previously decided upon be adhered to, and that the city engineer be instructed to furnish the company with the cost of the tarred macadam required. (2) As regards the letter from the Dunedin Trades and Labour Cduncil of Otago re purchase of a temporary steam plant, the matter is in the hand 3 of Messrs Noyes .oros., who from the first have been instructed to always give preference to local manufactures if suitable. The committee regrcts.tbat the Trades and Labour Council should have written- in the manner they haVo 'ione ui theirs of the 11th September, as the statements made therein have been based on wrong assumptions. The committee has always taken steps to encourage and foster local industry, the instructions to the electrical engineers being that where possible local labour should- always have preference. '.?he committee consider that the reflection cast on its chairman and the other members oi the committee ire quite uncalled for and entirely out of place. The committee has no recommendation to make in reference to the letter from the Waipori Falls Electric Power Company (Ltd.) of 12/9/02. Requisitions for supplies' for the Tramways Department coating £392 7s have been granted. ' * The Finance Committee recommends tne payment of the sum of £153 0s lOd towards the expenses in connection with the Coronation celebrations.
