CHRISTCHURCH, September 5

The final of the golf championship produced a fine match between Gollan and Gillies. Gollan went away with a lead of 5 holes, but Gillies gradually made matters more even, and but for poor putting would 'have given the Napier player a close run. As it was, he threw away, several holes by failing to hole out by short putts. The round was one of 3G holes. Gilliea made,a good drive, while Gollan's was rather sliced. He got on green with his third while Gillies took one more. Poor putting lost tho latter the hole, Gollan going down in 5. Both made good drives for the second, Gillies followng up by a sweet long approach, while Gollan, playing too strongly, went to the right, and reached the green with his third. Gillies was short with his approaches, and Gollan went down in 4. Gollan 2 up. Good tee shots saw Gillies play a low, brassy shot which just skimmed the bunker, while Gollan made a. magnificent approach shot. Gillies missed his putt, and Gollan won ill 4. Gollan drove a long, straight ball for the next hole, while Gillies sliced, and was short, topping his approach and putting it into the gome hedge. Making a good recovery, he ran over, the green, and his fourth went'over the hole, Gollan holing out in 4. Gollan 4 up. Gollan drove a beautiful ball against the wind for the next hole and lodged on the green. Gillies touched the right end of the bunker, but landed clear, his second being rather too strong. Gollan laid his second six yards from the hole, and went down in 3, Gillies being short. Gollan 5 up. While Gillies tapped his drive, which just crossed the creek, Gollan's second reached the green. Both missed their putts, and the hole was halved in 5. Gollan 5 up. Gollan's next drive was particularly good, being low and long. Both made good approaches, but Gollan's subsequent play was short, and Gillies went down in 5, winning the hole. Gollan 4 up. At the corner Gollan's approach from a good toe shot was short, while Gillies, laying his second close, Gollan failed to get up, and Gillies holed out in' 3. Gollan 3 up. Gillies then drove well, and Gollan prilled his shot, playing his clonk fiom a poor lie. Ho got into the fence, and, failing to get out, gave up the hole. Gollan 2 up. Gillies topped his next drive, and got into a low fence at the side, which Gollan played-clear to the left, Gillies getting 'out of the difficulty with the odd, failed to reach the top of the hill. Gollan's approach rolled some way down tho green, and Gillies overran tho hole. Gollan nearly holed out in 3, and won in 'J. Gollan 3 up. For the next hole Gollan foozled his drive and got under the fence with his second, Gillies having played two good shots, being well on the way to the hole. Gollan got over l the fence with his third, and rtcclied the green with a fine iron shot, Gillies being there in 3. Both made weak approach putts, and Gillies, putting too strong, the hole was halved in 6. Gollah 3 up. Gollan got into trouble, and gave up the next hole. Gollan 2 up. The tec shots were both good, and both of them played to go to the left'of the bunker.. Gollan got in a good long clock shot for his third. Gillies took his brassy, his shot being; nearly carried out of hounds by the wind. Gollan's fourth landed nicely on the gr;cn, Gillies being close up. Gollan stymied Gillies', who had to go round and lay dead, the hole being halved in 6. Gollan 2up G-illieo played his brassy and Gollan his clcefc. Gillies was short with his approach, and two more saw him overruli the fourteenth hole. Gollan laid his second dead, and holsd out in 3." Gollan 3 up. For the fifteenth hole both jmde tine drives. Gillies's drive next reached the edge of the green, Gollan's lauding'to the left in :t badly cupped lie under tho fence. He took 2 to get out. His fourth reached the green, but his putt was short, and Gillies, making a good approach putt, Gollan gave up the bole? Gollan 1 up. For tho nineteenth hole Gillies wa3 on the edge of the green with his iron, while Gollan was short, and lay near the top of the hill. His approach overran the hole. Gillies putted very poorly, and the hole was halved in -i. Gollan 1 up. Both then made rattling good drives, Gillies being Sydss off the creek, while Gollan, more to the left, was within 2ft of its edge. His approach ran over :fnd off the green. Gillies approached well, but missing two putts within 7ft, tho Inst of ISin, the hole was halved -in 5. Goilan 1 up at end of the first round.

Starting the second round Gillies was short, just over the creek. Gollan topped his drive, got into rough stuff pas: the second fence and got well oil. Gillies was short of the green with his third, and, both lay ah. the green with their fourth, the hole being halved in 6. Twentieth hole: Gillios's drive wascloce to the fence, Coilan pulling his to Spion l£op, and

almost getting into a bunker. Gollan, missing liis putt, Gillies won in 4, all square. Gillies's drive- for the twenty-first hole jumped the fence, Gollan getting a, beauty away. Gillies reached the green in hi 3 fourth, Gollan winning in 5. Gollan 1 up. Gollan drove a fine ball for the twenty-second hole. Gillies got into the fence with his second, which he topped, and he played out short-, Gollan winning in 3. Gollan 2 up. Gollan drove into the bunltcr, and Gillies played clear, and was on the green in I, Gollan being 1 more. - Gillies holed out. in 4, .and won the twenty-third hole. Gollan 1 up. Gillies topped his drive, Gollan's being a- beauty. Gillies sliced his second, Gollan putting a grand brassy shot on to the green. Gillies got.there in 4, but missed liis putt, Gollan going orit- in 4. Gollan 2 Tip. Splendid drives'of 108vds were made by each, the balls lying close together. Both made good seconds, but Gillies was more accurate in 'his third, and, holing out in 4, won the twenty-fifth hob. Gollan 1 up. Gillies spoiled his chances by a short drive and a poor approach, and Gollan won in 4 s and was 3 up. After good drives by both they reached the green .with theiT third, and after short approach putts by both the twenty-seventh hole was halved in 5. Gollan 2 up.

Gollan found the bunker, while Gillies, landing on the top of the hill, ran down and lay dead.... Gollan got into further difficulties, and gave lip the twenty-eighth hole. Gollan 1 up.

Gillies topped his drive, and Gollan got away a fine one. Gillies sliced his brassy, and played his iron shot short of the green. Gollan's third landed in the brushes at the side of the green. Both were on the green in 4, and halved the twenty-ninth hole in 6. Gollan 1 up.

Gillies's drive was just short of the fence, while' Gollan's went into it and played back, but he got over from a bad lie. Gillies's third was short of the bunker, which Gollan cleared. Gollan missed his putt, and Gillies won the thirtieth hole. All square.

Gollan's drive was much better than Gillies's', whose second just cleared tho fence. Gollan played two fine cleek shots'on to the hill, Gillies being there in 4.' Bad putting by Gillies followed, Gollan winning the thirtyfirst hole. Gollan 1 up

Gollan was on'the green with a beauty, while Gillies's drive was also good, but on the edge of tho green. The hole was halved in 3. Gollan 1 up.

Driving for Spion Kop Gollan just cleared the bunker, Gillies getting in a good one. Gollan made a fine approach on to the green, while Gillies, getting into the fence, gave up the hole, j Gollan 2 .up, and 3 to play. Both were off the green with their first. Gollan overran the hole with his second, Gillies lying two feet away. Gollan missed his approach putt, and Gillies, failing to go down, the thirty-fourth hole was halved in 4, Gollan dormy 2.

Gollan got on to the green with his first, but Gillies came to grief, and, his ball landing on tho hill, rolled down into the meadow. Ho made a good recovery, but overshot the green, and was short in his approach. Gollan made a careful approach, and Gillies, failing to hole out in liis fourth, Gollan went down in two moro and won the hole, the match, and tho championship. 3 up, and 1 to play.
