PRICE OF EGGS.
Tt> THE EDITOR.
Sin,—ln this morning's Times Messrs Hopkins and Son, writing on the above subject, try to drag the country storekeeper into unfair prominence. They say: "In the majority of cases the farmer orAegg producer gets about 5d per dozen for eggs, which the agents sell, to the consumer (pastrycook, I presume), at Bd." They attribute this state of matters to the country storekeeper having a profit, as also the agent in Dunedin. Now, Sir, I have been selling eggs in Dunedin for over 21 year,*, and should know something of the practices of the , country storekeepers. My carts gather the egg 3 from the producers, without any price being arranged at the time. They are sold to the best advantage and credited at Id per dozen less than .the price I receive. The Id per dozen covers packing, cartage, risk of breakages, etc., so that I do not think my bank balance is unduly swelled by the transaction. Tho Master. Bakers' Association made a mistake in dictating terms to the produce merchants, and I think should boar the odium of the position without trying to bring others in to it. The produce merchants have my sympathy in tho contest now on, and I trust they will come out successfully.—l am, etc., Waitati, September 2. A. KjIi'ATIUCK.
