Hogg's game with Pare Kaiha caused a good deal of interest, the latter having com© down with a reputation, for good strong play, ;which he fully justified. Ho led his opponent from the start, a-nd Hogg, who was rather off his game, never nmnage-d to catch up to him. Meldrum rather surprised Dr Gosset's admirers by defeating the veteran by 2 tip. At one point of the game the Otago man was 5 up and 6 to play, but Dr Gosset's steady play reduced the lead, , though not sufficiently to avert his defeat. In the match between Holmes, of Oamaru, and Kitto (Christohurcu) the latter had the best of it nearly all the way, and stood 4 up at the sixth hole. Holmes then v/on 2. With 2 "to his credit at the turn Kitto won the next 2 holes. From that out Kitto kept hia lead, though the play was here and there rather patchy. Holmes played a thoroughly steady game, and would have worn down a less reliable, player. A. 11. FisheT (Otago) put down W. Harman by no less than 7 up and f> to play. From hig play on Sattuday it was thought Fisher would give his opponent all he knew to beat him, but the decisiveness of his victory was rather a surprise. Fisher played good, steady golf, and leading from the first hole was 6 up at the turn. Each man then won an alternate hole. Fisher took the eleventh and twelfth, winning the match at -the latter. Meldrum (Otago) and Darling (Oamaru) played an even game, there being little difference between them, Meldrum winning on the last hole. In the game between Todd and Tapper the former displayed the better golf throughout. The match was all square at the ninth hole, and then, after alternate win 3, Todd won all the holes that were not halved, .until at the sixteenth he was Bup and 2to play. His long , drives were most effective. Tapper had some trouble with the tankers-, but was very good on the greens. Stronach had the best of the game* with Orbell for two-thirds of the journey, when, they stood all square. Orbell then improved his game, and won by 2 up at the last hole.
