As tho days are warm, ,the snow is coming away gradually, and 'the river may continue very low for a considerable time yet. The Rise' and Shine .dredge is working steadily, but there are some monster washstones to contend with, otherwise the return would be much better. ; The Royal Maori, diedge : will start again next -week," but will have a few days' repairing before dredging commences. I believe the dredge will start just ahead of where she left off, near tho top of the claim.NOTES FROM REEFTON. (Fbom Our Own Correspondent.) • ' REEFTON, August 31.' So far very few returns tire to hand from the .dredges. Unfortunately some of the'best dredges nave been laid up undergoing repairs, consequently, the aggregate, is much below thei mark. ' Tho Reeves's Proprietary return is not as good as last week, owing to heavy wash being met with. ' An. extraordinary meeting of shareholders iii tlu Buller Dredges Company- has been called fpr the 23rd September to consider\the .advisability of winding up the company, etc. The Industry Gold Mining Company commenced thoir first' crushing at tho beginning of last week, and will have a. clean-up about Wednesday. The reef is a well-defined one, and shows gold freely, and shareholders are confident of a good return. The shares are all held locally. Alpine.—The mine manager reports: The crosscut west in No. 7 level has beeri extended 15ft, making the total'distance 29ft. There is no improvement in No. 11' south. The reef is going east, or at right angles to the level, and I struck it this, morning. It will take 'two or three shifts before I can say anything about, it as regards quality and size, I broke a small pieco off with the pick, -and got gold in it by crushing. That is more than I could get- on the north end, further back in the level. Where we Ijave got it r.ow will be 40ft froni the north end of it. I have logged up the passes, and secured the ground in the StopeS' in the south end, so''that it can be kept open for an airway. ' There is 110 improvement in the rise from the stope, and I have stopped it. I will start the north branch level again to-night, as the reef is in the leading -stope, extending north over; the back of the level, and-there is no sign of it in the level. The. length of the reef is 44ft in the level, and it is 50ft in the first stope. ' THE WEST COAST. ; (From Qpr Own Corresponds^.) GREYMOUTH, August 31. Last week's returns are disappointing, though the Nelson Creek return is expected to improve 'matters. The . Pactolus dredge broke clown in the middle of the week, and did not wash rip. She starts again on Monday morning. The larger dredge having cleared room for herself to move'in, starts-three shifts at midnight. The first week's return will be hard to gauge, but after that lOOoz per week is regarded: as certain. ! 1 ' . r The'Buller Junction dredge was putting in a new screen and rollers last week. She starts 011 Monday. ' The Callaghan'a Creek dredge had to stop to clear away timber, but will get a start on Monday morning. The Mosquito dredge obtained 4Qoz 7dwt. Timber was again struck. The Great Woodstock return is 30oz. This dredge has still considerable difficulties to con-.-tend with, and the wash is very -uncertain. The Hokitikii River dredge started working yesterday, heading for the north side of the river.' The wash 011 the southern side will not pay. Tho Princo of Wales dredge made a. trial run yesterday, when everything worked satisfactorily. The dredgeinaster has had some trouble with his crow. The Kohinoor dredge is stopped at present through an accident, the bottom tumbler being broken. Tho ground was improving when the accident occurred. The delay will last about a week. The Stafford Waimea dredge obtained IGoz 18dwt for 114 hours. The dredge came across the woodwork of aji old tail race, which hampered thorn, during the week. The North Beach obtained 31oz 7dwt for 119 hours. A' small breakage delayed work. The wash is quite as'good as for the previous week. The Kohinoor dredge only got in 80 hours' work for 16oz lOdwt. Some of the ground has been previously worked. . Tho Aldinga dredge, in 18ft of wash, got 14oz 15dwt. I Tegard this claim as certain to improve. The Leviathan dredge worked all the week in a perfect mud hole, the quantity of wash being infinitcsima-lly small, imd the return of II oz for the wash treated is more than was expected. The dredge seems to have got on to a deep gut of mud and sediment, lying between the, beach and the back run of wash. The water in the dam' is as thick as, gruel. There is not much chance of an improvement as long as the present conditions exist. The Leviathan Freehold Company's dredge is working crossing tho creek, where a good deal of non-auriferous material will have to be removed. The tables , are completely clogged with mud and pug, that prevent the small quantity of wash coming up from being properly treated. The machine had sundry breaks, and waa woa-king 90 hours for Boz. The Ited Jacks for the week's return got 19oz 18dwt. The dredge is still in the narrows and still hampered by timber. The Maori-Gully dredge got soz for 60 hours' work. Tho timber is thinning out, but gold is scarcer. The splendid winter season has favoured the minors on the Callery, a tributary of the Waiho River, and quite a harvest of gold has been obtained.
