SOUTH DUNEDIN STREETS.

TO Tffli EDITOR, Sißr-Ratepayers of North Ward, South Dunedin, nave long had their patience sorely tried by tho scandalous neglect by the ■Borough Council of the footpaths in their ward, and an indignation' meeting has been talked of. Macandrew street is one of the oldest and most important streets in' the borough, tho traffic on it being very considerable; Reid street is also thickly built on with a number of good houses; and yet the footpaths are the most neglected in the locality. Hie kerbmg is broken away, and in rainy weather the streets are in many parts simply impassable. No doubt this state of things 13 largely due to the apathy of the ratepayers, who do not sufficiently look after their interests. So strong now is the fooling that a. strike against paying rates is soriously contemplated. I may also mention that newly-formed streets, with, perhaps, five or six .now houses on them, -are in the enjoyment of good footpaths, although the contributions of these to the Borough Council are trifling as compared with Reid and Macwdrcw streets. Want of funds can-scarcely bo pleaded, as the council have in view some very ambitious undertakings. It is sincerely to be hoped these long-needed wants will be attended to, or this growl will be the fore'runner of trouble in this locality.—l am, etc., . August 29. Arthur Smith.
